60 W oil in an 3.0 liter SC motor?
Just took advantage of the AutoZone discount on Valvoline VR1 motor oil but all they had left was 60W. Do you guys think this is too thick for an SC motor? I was thinking maybe in the heart of Summer (NE Ohio), but not sure.
Could not pass it up - less than $10 for ten quarts!!

Do NOT use SAE 60w in a 911 unless you wish to buy a lot of expensive parts. Thats far too viscous for these engines.
Leave that stuff for Top Fuel NHRA cars.

You can't use it, unless your ambient is well over 100F.
A multi-viscosity oil like a 15W-60 is going to be thinner at cold startup than an SAE 60, which is what you want to get the oil pressure up and oil flowing quickly. This chart is for a 1984 911, courtesy of the LN Engineering website. It doesn't even show an SAE 60 oil. But an SAE 40 can only be used above roughly 70F, whereas a 10W-40 can be used from about -5F to about 90F. Based on the way the chart progresses, the minimum temp for an SAE 60 would be 60C (140F). You need that lower W number for cold startup. ![]() Mark
