3.6L Throttle Cable Redux
It was time to replace the throttle cable on my 3.6L It had worn to the point where there were only about 5 strands of cable left. I'd thrown on some safety wire to catch it, "just in case" but I needed a better intermediate-term fix.
I went to the local bicycle store and told the kid what I was trying to do and showed him the cable setup. He sourced me a cable that was very similar, but the end was a bit smaller, and gave me a piece of nylon sheathing. $3 for the cable, and he threw in the sheathing for free. I duplicated the original Timmins design (only because I haven't figured out how to improve upon it yet) but added the sheathing so there wouldn't be metal-to-metal contact. Yes, the sheathing will wear thru, but this setup buys me some time. ![]()

I have an idea - that nylon sheathing will wear through over time, so you could try using reinforced sheathing (like I use on my bikes) - basically kevlar and steel-braid. There's no way that your cable is going to wear through *that* (it needs proper cable cutters or a Dremel to cut). How long does the sheathing need to be? If anyone's interested, I've got a couple of pieces of this stuff spare, one of which is about 13" long, the other of which is about 19" long...

Arghh, those picture make me wonder, again.....
With all those kits out there it is only question of time when the first reliability issues start to surface. Why trying to improve a design that seems to be weak rather than take a proven route? I am still planning to use a standard 993 throttle cable. At this point the only thing I am aware of that I have to fabricate is a little stand-off tube inside the tunnel or at the end of the tunnel. I'll keep the board posted when progress is made. Ingo

Sure looks better than bare cable looped around the post.
Thanks for the idea! Thom, do you acheive WOT on the 964 engine with this set-up? It's impossible duplicating the same set-up on a 993 engine to acheive WOT Thanks, |

Thom,
I read your other post about adding length to the pivot arm. Did you give up on that or are you still considering it? Seems like a reasonable solution to the WOT problem. My tranny is currently out of the car so it would be easy to do this MOD now, probably considerably more difficult once its in the car.
