Help Removing '79 Air (Smog Pump) Injection Pipe "Sipder
 
(Subject is supposed to read "Spider")

I'm removing the air injection on a '79SC. Thanks to a week's soaking with Deep Creep all the connectors came off really easily, I've got everything disconnected from the heads and the pump upstairs. I've also got the muffler off. Trouble is, I can't seem to get the tube system pulled rearwards past the oil crossover line and heat exchangers. I'm really hoping to not remove the heat exchangers or oil line to get this out. Any tips?

Wish I could help. My 75 came with the forward crossover style oil line like the SSI use. I assume you have it disconnected at the air "Check valve" at the engine tin and that it is simply being blocked by the oil line?

May have to drain the oil, disconnect that oil line and pull out. Perhaps someone else with the rear oil crossover line that has removed the spider line can comment...so free bump. :-)

The engine Tin pass through is actually rubber. it can get so hard from age that it feels like metal at first. FYI

I don't think you can pull it off whole without dropping the oil line and HE's.
I pulled mine when converting to SSI's.

Did you check your state's emission laws? Here, we must have them on the engine. They check.

Don't forget to plug the holes.

Someone told me that the plugs from Mercedes calipers fit perfectly.

Do NOT use teflon tape, he said.

Well crud, I was hoping you guys would have an easy fix! I've got the plugs from our host. I don't need to smog anything here in Iowa. VERY tempted to just cut the thing up, but also strongly want to just put the parts in a box whole. Perhaps its time to do the first season oil change. Or backdate the exhaust. Thanks for the tips.

Real easy fix...leave it alone, it doesn't hurt power at all. Not worth busting your knuckles over. Besides, all that plumbing looks so cool! Also, your car will be worth more if all parts are complete including smog and if "aint broke why fix"? Unless you're bored and have too much time on your hands...

Just my opinion FWIW.

We ended up getting the piping out in one piece. We removed the check valve up top and it gave us enough wiggle room to shimmy the piping past the oil crossover pipe.
