Attempt at rear targa glass installation
I've read quite a bit about this in advance so I have been warned that this is a tough job. The car is a 1972 911T. I started with a genuine Porsche seal and fitted it to the glass without any lube. Fitting it to the window was challenging but manageable. Then, I installed the aluminum trim, which was the trim that was on the window when I removed it for re-painting the car. The first thing I noticed was that the "hook" in the trim pointed downward (away from the targa window). This is in contrast to the front windshield trim that I recently installed where the hook pointed toward the window. I decided to use the trim anyway since it worked fine for the few years that I was diving the car before, and it was already bent close to the shape of the rear glass. It was tough, but I managed to get the trim fitted OK.
When I put the window in place, the rear part of the seal is twisted so that it points almost straight up. This just does not look correct (see images). I suspect that the aluminum trim might not have the correct shape. No matter how much I pound on the window, I can't get it to lower into the slot. The front of the seal is very close to the flange on all three sides, but obviously the rear part is not. (BTW, in the image, the cord ends are obviously on the WRONG side for installing the seal - that has been corrected) This also made me think that the free cord ends probably need to be at the top of the forward part of the seal since that part will probably need to be seated first. ![]() ![]() My original plan was to use the strap/ratchet approach to draw the window in. I don't have the anchors the floor for this, so I am trying to use the 2x4 under the car approach to attach the strap that Eddyvdw shows here (KevinP73 - Quick Targa window install trick). I haven't quite figured it out yet. Anyone out there care to share their technique?

Hey Steve -thanks for sharing your install process. We have a DIY tech article on Glass installation as well, if you need to reference it in the future.
