Question Does this 964 have the head-cylinder seals?

I want to purchase a 964 built in April 1991 and want to make sure that it was manufactured after the factory started to put the seals in between the heads and the cylinders.

I think you can tell from the VIN, but I don't know how to make sense of the numbers.

The car's VIN : WP0A2964M5411512.

Now to quote Bruce's book "The early cars are those built up to the 62M06836, M64.01 for the manual transmission cars".

Is the number he quotes the one off the VIN, or is it the engine number, or? Is this car after the changes?

Thanks in advance!

Mike

The number quoted by Anderson is the engine number. You can find this stamped in the engine compartment on the side of the fan housing. It's a bit difficult to find, but the owners manual tells exactly where it's located. You'll need a flashlight, even if it's bright outside.

The engine number for a 91 will start off with "62M" and the last 5 digits are the sequential engine number, so you want that last number to be greater than 06836.

I don't think you can check the cylinder head gasket update by the VIN number.

How does the car check out otherwise (mileage, etc.)?

Thanks for the response!

The car has some real positives, such as :

- original owner
- 61,000 Km ( about 38,000 miles)
- updated flywheel (it failed), A/C, new clutch, new tires
- very very clean and well maintained with all records since birth

Down side:
- Its had one accident on the right rear corner. Was clipped by a guy changing lanes and cutting it too close. The damage was reparied by one of the best body shops in the lower mainland

I have offered him a slightly lower price due to the accident. Its been repaired very nicely, but it does damage the resell value.

Any idea by how much? I figure 10% if the damage was not too severe.

If we can agree to a figure then as part of the PPI I will get the car checked out by my favorite body shop guy as well as the mechanical check.
