Replacement vs OEM Rear Glass Quality

I am going to replace the tinted, rear window glass with defroster grid in my 73 Coupe.

My 3 choices are Used, New OEM, and New Replacement Grade rear windows.....

My path to a very very nice used ended up as a box full of small, tempered-glass pebbles delivered to my front door.

OEM seems a little pricey and is a special order from the Fatherland.

Replacement grade seems a little easier on the wallet and is quicker to get.

Any one have any experience with the replacement grade rear windows? How's the quality compared to the OEM?

(also if anyone has a lead to an extremely nice used one, that'll work too )

Search here for "Prosource".

I bought a windshield from them last year. Richard is very good to deal with.

Prosource does not sell rear glass. I tried them first. Great for windshields.

When I replaced the windshield in the 911 a few years ago I bought the glass from SafeLite. It was about $120 and I picked it up from their local warehouse.

The glass was made by a company -- I can't remember their name -- but I think their logo is TY. They are based in Taiwan if I remember correctly. The fitment was fine and several hundred dollars less than OEM. OEM was $600-800 I think.

Now some people might recoil in horror at using this manufacturer but if you do a little digging you'll find that they are the OEM supplier for many vehicles. When I had to replace the windshield on my E350 they are the OEM supplier for Mercedes Benz right down to the MB logo on the glass.

Not sure they make the rear window glass but my point is I wouldn't exclude all Chinese/Taiwanese manufacturers until you do a little research. Sometimes it is absolutely worth buying OEM and sometimes it isn't.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.
