Used something similar on our sailboat years ago, but then there was no drain plug and no room under the engine for a drain pan either. I was never sure just how much old oil I was removing.

I have used a similar product for changing the oil in my boat. Works pretty well and does not seem to make a mess. It works off of suction, you seal the hose end, pump up the tank and insert the hose in the oil pan then release the valve. Presto, the oil is sucked into the can.

It would probably work to suck the oil out of the tank, but how would you empty the sump?

To measure how much oil you were removing you could put a quart of water in at a time and mark it off on the outside with a sharpy. Then dump out the water of course.
