73 Teardown

This picture is from a couple of weeks ago, I now have the car totally stripped. My next decision is if I should go for the full strip by dipping or strip it myself. This car has had some bad body work by PO and I plan on replacing the entire rear quarters with some from a 69. I want to use the car for street and track, my reservations with dipping is that I will not be able to get every nook and cranny covered to prevent corrosion. Any insight?

You didn't attach the pic.

Do a search on dipping, plus see this recent thread:

Car down to bare metal

It is easy enough to cover every nook and cranny with undercoating wands and attachments, or just powdercoat the car.

Just had two fenders and loads of suspension parts dipped and know what you mean. It takes everything off and leaves you with bare metal overall. Sure cleaned them up but now like your situation they will have to be primered everywhere.

Wish there was a way to dip the car in primer after its been stripped and thus cover the hidden areas for protection!

I got a price quote back this morning for $500-$600 bucks. Thats not to bad. This may be well worth the money just to get the car clean. How hard is it to get the main wiring harness threaded back through the tunnel? I have several pictures of the teardown process if anyone is interested.

I'd have to rate the harness removal as the biggest pain in the ass of the job. I cut the engine harness in a staggered pattern; the connectors will not feed through the holes. Ohhh you said BACK through the tunnel. I dunno! But our plan is to run some heavy twine up through tunnel, tie it to the harness, and pull it through. Shouldn't be too bad.

Does the dipper you've found have experience dipping cars? I'd ask a few questions about their experience with unibody cars before signing up. The flushing/rinsing done after the dip is really critical.

Post a link to your pics, I'd love to see 'em.

They are an industrial powder coater that has been around for a few years. I will pose that question to them. Are there any particular questions I should ask?

I'm thinking of doing the same thing and might be near you. Can you give me the name of the shop?

paul russel ,that restores mb's and other cars, quit dipping cars because of acids not being neutralized in hidden areas. thus rust would later form in these areas.

media blasting seems the way to go. i would dip the removable parts and then hand strip the rest.

i will be facing this problem soon. if you could remove all the double/sandwiched panels and dip it you would be okay. keep us posted of your progress.

Hi Mcdaniel,

I know that the dip small parts, I had my tank from a 64 Willys stripped, I'm not sure about coating. They are very nice people to deal with though and I'm sure if you called they would help.

If you checked the thread out, I'm the one who had the car dipped. I have worked with Powder Coaters for the past 2 years with my car. Do not get your car done by a powder coater who is not experienced in doing cars. There is a big difference between a iron fence and a car.
Other than that I would do it again in a flash. But I'm not using mine for street use. That would make a difference.
