What size is this nut (pedal cluster)?
 

You are looking at the pedal cluster of an '86 930. The brake rod is on the top of the pic, the clutch spring/arm on the bottom. This nut (see arrow) helps hold the pedal cluster in the the car as it is attached to a long metal plate. The nut is threaded on a bolt which is Allen at the other end.

I am trying to remove the pedal cluster and cannot get this nut off. You can see, when I applied torque with a 17mm, it started to strip. Is that the correct size? Unfortunately, it is too tight for a socket or closed wrench.

1st soak with PB Blaster...then maybe a flare wrench would fit? Hard to guess a size with a pic...If you don't have a flare wrench set, highly suggest you get one. What a coincidence...Wayne sells the SK brand right here...;)

Oh, good idea! I got a flare wrench set for Christmas (new addition I forgot about). It is tight, so I hope it fits.

It's been soaking with WD-40 for about an hour now...

Too tight for a flare.

I don't mind cranking on it with the correct size wrench, I just don't want to strip it.

(Wouldn't you know... I called in 'sick' for work today so I could work on my car. Now, spending two hours on a single nut is driving me crazy. I think my luck is failing.)

WD40 is better than nothing, but next time you're in an automotive chain store? Pick up a can of PB Blaster...I was like most, a skeptic until I tried it. The stuff is great! Hope the flare wrench helps...just saw the too tight for a flare post...arrggh! Other than cutting, I'm out of ideas...hoping one of our pro wrenches weighs in...

Well, I got it out... but I never did get that nut off.

Apparently, it is TACK WELDED to the pedal tray! I ended up using an allen wrench to pull the bolt out from the other side.

To get the clutch cable off, I released the cable at the transmission, then loosened the nut at the pedal cluster. I was able to turn the old cable (from under the car) until it came out.

I'm 6'3" and my body just doesn't fit in the footwell.

the proper procedure is to pull out clip and remove the upper pin on the brake push rod, leaving the bottom connected, and remove the 10mm bolt up in the trunk area that holds the long flat bar to the upper aluminum housing. again, leave the bottom connected. when you reinstall the assembly do it this way and you will have an easier time.
