Paint Matching Help
I have a 68 912 with no history. The car was factory Ivory but has been repainted at some point in a med-light blue metalic. When I got it was missing the gas filler lid and the torsion bar hole covers. I bought those and painted them with a "close-ish" rattle can Duplicolor temporarily. Now that I'm getting around to the details I wanted to those painted closer to a good match. I went to a Sherwin Williams Auto Finishing store and asked them to match the paint. The guy tried to get a read with some gadget he held up to the car but said he couldn't get one so he used paint sample cards instead. I was standing right there when he was matching up the cards and we both agreed the card chosen was a VERY close match. He went in and mixed up a small bottle of touch up and a srpay can for me. A few days later I tried the touch up and it went on looking 2-3 shades too light. I called and he agreed to make another attempt. Long and short of it, same result. My next attempt was doing some research online and it seems Porsche made a color, Gemeni Blue, that looked really close to the color of my car which got me to thinking…..maybe whoever painted it used that color since it was a Porsche factory color, albeit from different model years. So I found a company online that mixes automotive paint in a can to order with the paint code. I got it the other day and no go, doesn't match.
Sooooo, I'm stuck. Anyone out there do paint matching? I have a piece I cut from my figberglass rear valance for comparison. Does anyone know of a place that if I sent the piece they could match the paint from it?
