big spacer for Bilstein Strut replacment?

I have early Bilstein struts and the new B6 inserts have this machined ring on top of the strut where my old struts didn't:

Old Strut, dust cover giant spacer that went on top of dust cover:

New Strut

So with the old strut, that giant washer/spacer went on top of the dust cover which sat flush on top, but now I don't think its necessary, correct?

Also now the dust cover won't sit all the way down on top of the strut but rides on that machined ring?

So what's the ticket?

Thanks,
Paul

That's the US only 10mm spacer to raise the car up to meet impact requirements.

I think 74-83 have them. You can leave it out, especially if you are lowering the front any.

I don't know about your second question about the dust cover as I had Boge struts that I put a different style of bilstein insert into.

My car was lowered at the dealer when purchased new, per the dealer invoice. I will have to leave the spacer out, because there is barely enough threads on top of the strut now when I reinstalled with the spacer.

So now I am really going to be low. I re-christened my sailboat "Low Life" so I guess it fits with the 911 too!
