where can I find my engine and transmission number?
Hi All,
I did a search on the forums but couldn't find anything specific with my question. I just need to know where my Engine number is and my transmission number to turn in my CoA paperwork to Porsche. thanks! |

The trans number is stamped on bottom of transmission along a boss. |

Matching numbers is when the numbers you have match the numbers on the certificate from Porsche.

Thanks Alexm930.
I've been apparently looking at the wrong numbers then, which explains why nothing seemed to match up. djpateman... While this may be true... I believe the general understanding for any car with 'matching numbers' is that the engine VIN matches the car's VIN... which is usually identified by a set of numbers that equal the serial # of the car (I think for some, it's like the last 5 numbers) At least that is how I identify other cars I've purchased as having matching numbers on them. |

Except that sometime around 88?? they started putting a paper/ plastic vin sticker on both the engine and trans which at some point matched your car's vin but NEVER your stamped engine or trans number.

if I can decipher the Canadian quoted above to further clarify numbers matching mean the motor & transmission came from the factory with the chassis. a cert of authenticity as noted will declare the chassis number along with the motor & trans numbers included with the car. big value in originality circles. on topic here. does anyone have the old link that helps in deciphering what year a specific tran & motor number mean in regards to production year? |
Is it really worth more to have an original engine?? given that there aren't serial numbers to accurately associate the two - does it really matter?
I'm asking because of a broken head stud on my '87 Carrera. I need to decide to either rebuild the existing motor, or replace with a rebuilt one. I think I can at least know what the whole thing will cost with a rebuilt motor -vs. paying for a rebuild that we can't say for sure what it will cost. The fact that the numbers can't be correlated for certain, would seem to mean that ANY car could have a replaced engine from a similar car of the same year, and therefore, how would anyone know for sure? I would definitely tell a buyer, down the road, that it's not the original engine - so that's not a issue to me (i.e. hiding the fact). I'm merely questioning, if we can NEVER be sure, does it matter for resale value? Thanks -Glenn |
To most owners that are particular about their Porsche, matching numbers is a value factor. Original engine and transmission are an indication that the previous owners have properly maintained their cars.
Theoretically, rebuilding an existing engine should cost less than buying another engine already rebuilt since you do not have to replace every part. To say that "there aren't serial numbers to accurately associate the two" or "the numbers can't be correlated for certain" is complete nonsense. I can get records for practically every Porsche ever built that has the original engine # associated with the VIN. For the majority of the cars I can also get the transmission #. The better the provenance the higher the value. Quote:

Gotcha. Sorry if I was mistaken. So... how can I find out for sure, if the engine in my car is original or not?

You request a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche. Link on this page: Porsche Other vehicle and registration documents - Porsche USA |
Thanks. how quickly do they usually arrive? I think I read it could take a couple of months.
