what was Reggie thinking when his reserve for a Camaro was $300K? Or the owner of the Jag that stalled out at $950K. He couldn't have that much into it, could he?

I think that inside bidders started the bidding to get interest going for the car. It seems to me it was more than likely quite a bit below the reserve and the inside bidders knew it.
It reminds me of this guy on Ebay that sells these "Mix and Match" cars...... "1998 993 Twin Turbo S Cabriolet" which is a FGlass bodied SC tub with a 2.7 motor. Go figure. Last edited by RickM; 01-23-2003 at 11:12 AM.. |

After watching the "FAKE" Hemi Cuda sell for $137,000. It reminded me of an 'ol saying. Sell the "sizzle" not the steak.

I think that the highest price will go to a car that is manufactured with a distinct feature from a desireable manufactuer. With the Porshce, the race cars, R's and RS's will command a premium for their rarity and race car performance. But what about the daily drivers or standard production cars? This is where the Targa comes in. You just can't buy a true Targa anymore. Sure the big moonroof is passed off as a "Targa" with the 993, but the styling of the Targa is long gone. Some may prefer the coupe over the Targa, but I I have never heard anyone comment that the "Targa" makes the 911 undesirable or is so far out there that the design is flawed. The Porshce standard of excellence up to the late 90's combined with the styling of the Targa up to 94 will make it the most valuable of the daily driver communter cars. This is why you see a 77 Targa going for $27K at BJ. The price will probably increase as the years pass and fewer and more Porsches are taken off the road for track purposes of parting out.

The issue may be that it is a 1977 911 Targa with a 3.0 upgrade and "slantnose" conversion. I think the $27k it got to was primer for real bidders and is an inaccurate barometer for Targas' value.

Yeah
I watched the whole thing (my wife hated me for it), but this year was a joke. The prices and bidding for crap was unreal. The only good purchase (if you can call it that) was the GT40 for $320K Oh yeah, can you move this to the off topic area so as not to get in trouble

Yeah, the GT40 was very sweet for the price. I also thought the prices were very inflated. Especially for "customized" and 2nd tier cars.

I was there for most of the bidding and I agree that some cars went for way more than anyone would expect. The P-Cars present were average at best or kit-cars.
There were several nice jags and ferraris that went well below what the Muscle cars were bringing. There was one yellow Dino in particular that was stellar. Overall a let down this year for those of us who enjoy european cars. I really wish the emphasis had been on Jags and not Muscle Cars.

"inside bidders"
I think Rick's got it correct. A guy who works for me has been into the 'auction scene' for many, many years as both a seller and buyer (including Barret-Jackson). He's opened my eyes as to what really happens behind the scenes. -- Curt |

Personally I think the agreeably inflated prices for a lot of the cars could partially be put down to the increase in the "Floor Walker" staff - specifically Amie Sparks. I've come to enjoy watching the BJ auction just to watch the auction process. The cars themselves (at least the good ones) are gravey. The Floor Walkers are very good at encouraging the bidders to keep bidding. It doesn't hurt when it's an attractive women doing the personal contact thing - you know; hand on the shoulder, pleading look in the eye, treating you like a long lost family member. The only other industry where I see that process work so well is by the waiters in family style Italian restaurants in Boston's Northend or NY's Little Italy.
Anyway - I find it fascinating to watch the differant styles of the floor walkers and their cliants.

ok, just looked at the 550 spyder rep. that didn't sell for 32k.
that is simply insane. i know there are a lot of 550 spyder guys here on the board. i think that car is work maybe 25k on a good day. this years auction was probably the strangest year yet. Amie or Amy, the floor walker, please. a cute girl and cars are a wonderful combination. my wife asked me "why is she touching everyone?", my reply was "she's getting paid to do that". |

I'm not accusing anyone but this has been known to happen. ;-)
Shilling: Fraudulent bidding by the seller (using an alternate registration) or an associate of the seller (the House) in order to inflate the price of an item. Also known as bid rigging and collusion.

After seeing what sold this year, I'm 'sold' that Barrett Jackson is the only place to sell your car!
We'll see if the LA auction in June is just as bad - last few years, there were some stellar bargains! -Wayne
