California Smog, Engine Swap?

I have question about swapping engines in California an passing the visual and sniffer smog test.

If you have a 1976 911 for example, could you swap in a 1976 turbo motor and pass all smog requirements since the year of the shell and engine are the same? 1976 requires no cat, no egr, etc only smog pump.

?

Yes. But you have to make sure the 76 emissions configuration matches the car the engine came from. You also need to make and appointment and get the Referee to inspect the car and give you a compliance sticker or no one will test it.
If you are just changing engine displacement and internal parts I wouldn't worry about it. My Mustang is a dry sleeve big bore with trick flow heads and Comp cams. All illegal, but the car passes visual and tail pipe.

A 930 turbo Carrera engine from 1976 is worth more than your whole car.

yeah I just had to ask, I have a line on a 77 tub, it appears I have run afoul of the smog laws, I have a 81 sc with a steel widebody, but it has a factory replacement unstamped 3.0 turbo motor, the car was stolen and stripped early in its life and the owner at the time when it was recovered bought it back with salvage title rebuilt it as a widebody with a factory replacement 3.0 turbo motor, back then he didn't have any smog problems nor the guy that had it before me ( I worked with him and bought it when it came avail) so here I am stuck trying to figure a way through this

If the engine was a complete 1976 3.0L, except the engine case was a 1980's 3.0L SC case would that mean that the engine would need the smog equipment from an 80's SC?

From what I understand about this subject is that it goes by "whichever is newer". If the chassis is newer than the engine than the engine has to be brought up to the chassis year-model smog specs (both equipment and tailpipe). If the engine is newer then it must conply to its year-model spec.

Or just get a Montana LLC and have the LLC register it in Montana...

If the chassis is newer then the engine it is illegal under federal law.

There's a federal law against swapping an older motor into a new chassis?

My recent foray into California smog:

California smog: '95 3.6 in an '84

I built a Cobra replica a couple of years ago and there was a lot of bad information and holes you could fall into when it came to registration, smog exempt etc. I finally just called the local CARB guy out at the community college and he told me everything thing I needed to do and my options he was very helpful. Just a thought.
