3.2 w SSI's revert to stock exhaust?
 

Hi guys,
I don't know how I get these ideas in my head. I have an SSI exhaust system with Dansk sport exhaust on my car. It runs fine. It's pretty loud. I know a lot of people like loud exhaust, but I'm of the age where I prefer smooth, quiet power. I'm considering getting together used components to reinstall the car's stock exhaust system including cat.
Beside the costs involved, what do you guys think are the pro's and cons of this idea?

Pro's:

Back to stock
Cat for emissions if necessary
I guess resale value to states that do care about emissions
quiet exhaust

Cons:

loss of some hp
more components taking up space under the motor

Keep the ssi's. Get rid of the sport muffler and switch to the regular Dansk 2-in-1-out muffler with the 60mm tip. Best of both worlds.

Your car is old enough that I don't think Illinois bothers with emission testing anymore (my '84 had extended use Antique plates, so it's automatically exempt). I have the original exhaust on mine and it works well, but the simplicity of the SSI system is hard to beat and I would probably backdate mine if I could.

When you say you have a Dansk sport muffler, is it a double exhaust bullhorn or early style sport muffler? They can be tiring over time, and the early straight pipe system is just too much for a street car to my ears (also rather vintage at my age). Switching to a stock type muffler may be all you need.

3.2 and SSI
 

Hi Dave,
your best solution will not be expensive but requires quite a bit of work...
you gut out the car interiour including seats front and back + all carpeting and install sound insulation material including the interior fire wall
You will be able to listen to Mozart with great pleasure

Thanks, David. I have already done the full soundproofing for my car. It's pretty quiet from inside, but sounds like a hot rod from outside.

OK now you're going to think I'm crazy. A few year ago I bought a Supertrapp to clamp on the end of my muffler. I used it on its least restrictive (and least sound diminishing)configuration, and was not impressed so I took it off and forgot about it. I decided to reset the Supertrapp to 70% restriction, just to see how it sounds. Well, the exhaust sounds very much like a stock 3.2, and the car drives pretty well. I don't go to redline, so I wouldn't know if the power is off at WOT, but I don't feel any problem through midrange rpm's, and it maybe drives a little better at parking lot speed.

PS If I did revert to stock, I would need to finance the change by selling my current exhaust.

I would have posted these values earlier, but I had a dead 9V battery in my sound meter. I measured sound level one meter behind car, at exhaust level with and without Supertrapp at idle of 900 RPM:

without Supertrap 96 db
with Supertrapp 87 db

9 db is a large difference in sound level, since it is a logarithmic scale (9 db = 3x sound difference.)

Interestingly, the interior sound level at ear height, mid cabin was 82 db vs 83db with and without Supertrapp. I think that speaks to my significant cabin sound proofing efforts.

I am also considering going back to stock. I have ssi's with a 2 in 1 out Dansk muffler on an 86 engine. My seat of the pants meter tells me that there was a lot more low end usable torque with the stock exhaust. I enjoy that power much more since I am a street driver.

The 3.2L will do better HP and Torque with stock exchangers, cat bypass and dansk sport muffler. The SSIs are not really the best match for the 3.2L you'd be surprised how well the stock heat exchangers with a decent pipe will do.

Dyno it as is now and then swap and re dyno, you'll be surprised.

Aren't the exhaust ports on a 3.2 slightly larger than the ID of the SSI's? Something like 38 and 35mm respectively?

Correct! that's why the stock exchangers are a better match even though they are not tuned equal lengths they still work better

So it must be that 3.2 heat exchangers are different from SC?

Hi Dave, i have SSI's on my 1981 SC, and i chose the stock steel banana exhaust from 1974 911. This is very close to stock sound, only idle is little bit more rumbly.
I'm with you regarding noise: i don't like sports exhausts, i don't like very loud exhausts.
I had the 2-1 Dansk SS sports exhaust before and i really didn't like it.

This setup is perfectly acceptable, it's still an aircooled Porsche of course (meaning: louder than any other recent petrol car).
This is a very easy solution, because as you know, taking off SSI's is not a 5 minute job :)
