Help!!! Porsche 915/73 Main Shaft Rear Bearing Race Removal

Ugh!

I'm trying to remove the main shaft bearing race that fits into the differential housing on the 915/73 transmission (the smaller main shaft bearing - http://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/93030239101.htm?pn=930-302-391-01-M260). I'm replacing the bearing, and it comes with a new race - which I understand should be used / installed with the new bearing...

The bearing's outer race is pressed into the differential case, and is kept in place by a small circlip (that doesn't have any means to grasp) on the differential side of the race (keeps the race from moving toward the differential):

For the life of me - I can't remove this circlip - I've been fighting with it for the past hour and a half, with small picks and stuff - but can't get it out.

I can't see how I can press the bearing race out without removing this circlip and I'm getting beat trying to remove it.

Appreciate any thoughts on what I can do.

Thanks,

Harbor Freight to the Rescue

Went to Harbor Freight and picked up some larger picks.

I ground the pointed tip to an angle on the large 90° pick - which allowed me to get under the lip of the clip and use the 90° angle of the pick to leverage / pry against the case.

Gotta have the right tools, and in spite of this one being a cheap throw away - it did the trick...

Onward - Gordo's 915 Transmission Rebuild

Gotta have the right tools, and this one did it.
Thanks,

FWIW I took a different approach (after struggling similarly). I couldn't remove the snap ring but i could rotate it in its slot. Therefore i tapped on the bearing through the gap in the ring, then i would rotate the ring 90 or 180 degrees and tap again. Repeat, repeat... I used a relatively short round headed (hex driven) bolt as my "punch" because it didn't have any sharp edge to scratch anything. It worked nicely.

Nice work - I didn't consider that approach (I was obsessed with getting that clip out).

Good luck, Gordo

Heat the case and they almost fall out.
