Painting Three Piece Wheels

Hi,

I am looking to paint my three piece wheel centers and rim in black. They are kinesis K10.

Do they need to be disassembled? What about the rim - they are fairly shiny, will paint stick to them?

Thanks

Take them apart find out what the torque specs are first) , sand blast the shiny parts then primer and paint.

Thanks for the reply.

Any issues with paint between the fasteners? I don't want anything becoming loose.

Also, aren't these stretch bolts? I did not think that they were reusable.

Maybe blast with glass bead or walnut shells. Kinder, more gentler for Al surfaces. If polished, don't blast.

DO NOT paint the wheels between the fasteners, any area that is clamped by the bolt (under the bolt, back of the rim, wheel flange) must be free of paint.

Remove the centers, mask off mating surfaces including the lugnut holes. See pictures of mine below. If you are doing the rims too you should also consider anodizing or powder coating. Obviously follow manufacturer recommendations for torque and sealant.

Afaik the fasteners can be reused (at least I did on my iForged wheels) without issues. Also, yes...no paint on the places where metal meets metal. I simply smeared some Vaseline on those spots with my fingers prior to painting. Once the paint cured I wiped it off with a rag. No problemo.

The best option for blasting IMO.

I disassembled my HRE Fuchs replicas to refinish them (and go to 17s) and the centers were painted in the area of the fasteners (from HRE), so I didn't worry about paint there. In reality, a few thousands of an inch of effectively incompressible paint isn't going to adversely affect the preload.

A pic just for the fun of it:

Take the time to do the prep work and you'll be glad you did. We have some paint accessories/guns/etc in our catalog if needed.
