Fuel expansion chamber

Doing some body work on my 911 70t at the moment and pulled the fender off to find the fuel expansion chamber obliterated, it appears to have melted holes in it at some stage in its life (long before my ownership). If this has been like this with holes in it and I haven't smelled fuel fumes can the set up including the charcoal canister can be deleted? I'm guessing after 40 years the charcoal canister is not at it's best either? Easy enough to buy a new one but why if it it not serving a purpose.
