This particular one is installed on a Jenvey 44mm, just like mine

Velocity Stack Filters filters

They're great if you want to restrict airflow. Major CFM drop compared to a filter. Years ago someone flow benched "tea strainers" and they were awful.

I use UniFilter Motorcycle stack filters. They are taller, flow well and have washable oiled foam elements.

Sorry, you can't generalize all filters of this style as yielding poor performance - there are different designs. Yes, there are some poorly designed ones, but there are many variables, including surface area, metal gauge, filter material...

I bought some from BBR Filters, who will custom build them to suit whatever velocity stacks you have. They have a silicone base that slips over the bellmouth and the metal screen is set inside the silicone. Many of his customers appear to be running them on race cars. I think he has some data to back them up but I can't find them right now.

So here is a recent Motec M84 2.8 liter engine we did with the Jenvey ITB system, velocity stacks with the same screens as in the picture above. The dyno overlay shows the two runs and are labeled accordingly. They didn't hurt the performance as much as one would think.

Back in college, my auto tech instructor perused my wire screen "air filters" (much coarser than these more sophisticated tea leaf strainers) and mentioned that if I took all that wire and closed up the gaps between them, what's left is the total free air intake space. My visual estimate of the wire gauge and spacing of those tea leaf strainers; maybe an air intake that's about 1/3 - 1/2 less than the ID of the velocity stack. Foam or paper filters may look less racy, but they should do a better job of filtering the high volume of air engines require.
