Are all 915 Transmissions 5 speed ???
I had heard someone looking for a 4 speed 915. I thought only 930 Turbo came in a 4 speed. Are they still considered a 915?
|
There was a 4spd 915 for most of the 70s. Different than a 930 4 spd.

In 72 for instance, I think the T was a 4 speed and the S was a 5, unless the T had S options
Back in those days a 5 speed was a high end option on many cars and everybody drooled if you had one |
The earliest records i have start w/ 1970 MY
4 speed versions of the 915 were offered on all models T thru Carrera(for some years) for all years 1970 thru 1977. First year there were no 915 4 speeds was 1978 w/ the intro of the SC. Mostly these would be found on stripper T models. It depended more on what the individual importers specified when they ordered the cars 1970-71 911.00 4 spd used in 911T (US & CDN) 1972-73 915..12 4 spd used in 911TV/911E/911S RoW, 911TE US & CDN 1974 915.16 used in 911/911S/Carrera 1975 915.48 used in 911, 915.45 used in 911S & 911Carrera(US, CDN,Cal), 915.16 used in 2.7 Carrera 1976 915.45 used in 911, 915.49 used in Carrera 3.0 & 911S(J) 1977 915.65 used in 911/911S, 915.66 used in 911/911S/Carrera 3.0 |
I'll post later when I get to my office. There's some funky stuff that went on with the middies
Ps. To avoid confusion the 70-71 911 gearbox should be ignored. Its not a 915. |
My 77 has a 4 speed. It was the standard option on the 2.7 liters ROW.
Same 1st gear, longer 2,3,4. 4th is about the same at 5th in a 5 speed |
Long day... what I wanted to look up was the switch from the 4spd being standard. They did a weird thing with the US market in 1976&1977. The 5spd was The standard gearbox. But not ROW. rOW cars had the 4spd standard and the 5spd was an option. I've even seen a '76 Carrera3 with a 4spd.
Bob, 4spd versus 5spd had nothing to do with mag or alu. Aluminum 915s started with the SC in 78. I'll see if I can find the old 915 differences thread. I think it was RWebb or maybe KTL who had a thread with a chart of the changes/design improvements by year and model. |
I think aluminum 915s started in 77, not 78.
I have a 74 ROW 911 with the low HP 2.7. I *think* it is a 5 speed. I bought the car for the trans and its 7:31 R&P. |
915.23 for the 5 speed 76 912E - actually stamped as a 923xxx....
