Is the VIN on trans supposed to be different?

My VIN... as it appears on the option sticker is WP0AB0915...
As it's a US car.

However, the VIN on the trans is WP0ZZZ91Z...

So... the serial number matches up... but I thought the ZZZ meant it was a ROW/Europe?

Matt's request is a good one. I have never heard of/seen a transmission stamped with a "VIN," aka Vehicle I.D. number. I too am interested in a picture of the trans with your mystery number...

No stamp... it is the Genuine Porsche VIN sticker on the transmission case at the bottom of the case (just to the side of the drain plug I believe).

Here is an edited pic (I removed the serial #)

I don't care about your actual vin. Like Peter, I've never seen an air cooled car with a vin on the gearbox.

Looks like one of the "safety stickers" used to deter theft of parts. I have seen these on '87 and later cars.
The ZZZ essentially just becomes a "place holder" in this case.

Much like the VIN stamped into trunk will show ZZZ while the DOT sticker and VIN visible through windshield will have the appropriate country designation.

Yep... you will find the same stickers on your rocker covers, doors, fenders, everywhere.

Yes, though it would be more accurate to call it a chassis or production number. In Europe is generally becomes the vin though for overseas cars a vin is assigned.

These days the vin is etched right on the gearbox case.

Yep....Anti-theft sticker. Mine make for an interesting conversation starter.

Yep....Anti-theft sticker. Mine make for an interesting conversation starter. They really stand out without rockers. That, and the G50 dropouts
