I believe one of our fellow Pelicans has a 911 electric drag car, grip911.

When I first picked up my '75 Targa (badly abused and non-running), I had considered doing an electric conversion. I couldn't get the right combination of battery capacity / weight power at the time of my paper study. I do think there will be a decent market for converted vehicles in the future as the cost of batteries comes down.

How often do you drive more than 200 miles in a day?

I like the idea of range-extenders for when you know you're gong further than usual. Something like the scooter motor in the BMW i3 REx. Unless you're going up mountains for all of those miles, or moving along near triple digits, it takes very little power to maintain speed, and a little motor could keep the batteries up.

If that range extender was packaged well, you could swap the whole thing out without much hassle. That is compelling from a maintenance and upgrade point of view...Maybe someone comes out with a microturbine that you can attach with four bolts to extend your range however far you want with some gas tank. It could even be a little trailer your drag behind the car (not quite what you'd be looking for in a sports car).

The economics aren't there yet, but electric drivetrains are just plain cool. You look at the maintenance schedule on a Chevy Bolt and it's like "change the brake fluid every 2-3 years."

Electric 911 - Influx
This is great, thanks for sharing this.
Having driven a Tesla Model S, that instant power response is remarkably satisfying. I wouldn't be caught dead in a Prius, but I'd love to drive that '79 electric 911 in the video today.

I emailed them to see if they sell kits or plans to DIY. Wonder what the costs would be....I also did a 914 E conversion 25 years ago. As always range is limited due to battery life and a lead foot.

I think a Tesla S battery pack is $30k alone, so...that would be the first area to compromise on cost...

I agree with you. Keep in mind, the battery is essentially the car (Tesla). Cost-conscious let to the Model 3.

Its slightly relative though... Eventually at least $30k is going into every air-cooled 911

I drive a Prius to the office each day, and the 911 on weekends for fun. Peak hour traffic does not care if you are in a Prius or a Tesla or a Porsche for that matter, we all get there in exactly the same time. The little Prius has surprising pickup and the weekday fuel economy balances out the 911's Sunday drive , try one.

At the local body shop. Left a message for the owner.

Lead acid?
This Ghia has 2 Li ion batteries with 40 cells each. The initial cost was $20k the government paid to have them made. An engineering student I worked with last year did the conversion. It has a 75HP electric motor adapted to the original VW clutch and transmission.

Well I have a chance to pick up a converted 914. It needs batteries. So any hook up is appreciated.

The car in the video looks beautifully restored, which, along with using the original tranny makes the whole thing work, imho. Otherwise why not buy a Tesla if you want a speedy commuter electric.

Why not buy Cayman instead of any old 911?

I drive a 1973 911 every day.

I have written 3 different comments on driving a 911 and a Prius in thee same week and deleted them all.

I could not handle it!
