Fiberglass insulation question.

I just recently started doing some maintenance on my 3.0. I took the rear engine tin off and noticed some fiberglass insulation stuffed on top of the cylinder. Can anyone tell me if this is factory insulation or someone along the line stuffed it in there?

Must have been Mighty Mouse judging by the amount of insulation probably installed in an ill perceived effort to reduced engine compartment heat. Air cooled means lots and lots of air. Do a leak down test first to determine if you have a more serious problem. If it fails you probably have to consider a top end rebuild at the very least. If you get acceptable results, I would then pull the intake, shroud, etc and properly remove all that insulation crap. Check to see that the baffles are still there. Leak down test equip is $100 or so if you can't borrow one.
good luck.

People have done stranger things. That would be a Mickey Mouse.

It should stink to the high heavens of mouse wizz if rodents.

There may have been a mound behind the fan and when finally started the air flattened the nest against the back.

If it passes basic tests like compression, etc. that stuff could be clawed and blown out vs removing the CIS. Especially if fan is removed.

Right, it's relatively easy to reach in there with the fan and alternator pulled out. I've done it. Since this engine is already out, it will be possible to do a complete clean-up with greater confidence.

You under estimate their tenacity.

I have a boathouse that I catfish out of. We bait them in with soured corn and beef cubes. Beef cubes are beef feed that are aboutt the size of your thumb.

I bought two 50 lb bags of cubes to use the next weekend. I filled up our storage can with one and left the second bag on the boathoue floor.

Two days later I go out to fish and find the 50 lb bag empty. Not a cube left. Hole in the bottom. I then notice that the area behind the tv and stereo is packed full of beef cubes. When removing the foods stash I find the culprit. A rat. A rat that was chewing on the tv power cord. Until he fired himself. He was dead but still biting down on the cord. Good riddance.

SOB moved 50 lbs of food about 5 ft in two days.

At least he had that five day run. Think of the plans he was making.
