Have I broken this gauge?

Well guys, I was up to split my gauges apart to change the original background colour.
When I took the needle away from the RPM-meeter the small pin who seems to be attached to the gauge followed with the needle instead. So my question, have I destroyed this meeter? Or can I fix it some how. I put up a pic on it, bad quality but anyway... /Jocke |

A little image processing first.
I took a spare RPM gauge apart to deal with the bouncy tach needle. I haven't pried the needle off yet. I took the hole meter out of the housing with the face plate still attached. Does your shaft appear to be snapped or can you stick the needle with the little pin back on the meter? Ingo |

the small pin looks like a part of the shaft that snapped off on your tach needle. I don't think you can repair that. Maybe North Hollywood Speedometer has a better answer for you. I would send them this picture and ask if they have a replacement meter. |

White faced gauges

I'm planning a white faced gauge replacement very soon too; I've got the new faces and lots of info from Pelican Tech/BBS. Still nervous about screwing up my perfectly good gauges, but nonetheless, will be doing it soon. I love the look. Post some pics please! Also any tips you can share would be appreciated too. An airforce pilot emailed me with some really good tips that spurred on my confidence to order the faces. I also read that a jumpy tach needle can be a good indicator that your points/alternator may be deficient? Search under jumpy tach and you'll find some info on that if that's your case too? Looking forward to hearing more on your project. Cheers P.S. I just came across this thread. The exact same thing has happened to me. Does anyone know how to fix the needle? Or maybe where i can buy a replacement.

Broken my friend.....I performed the same upgrade myself and broke two sets. It turns out that rather than prying if off I took it all apart first then turned the needle counter-clockwise until it lifted out, nothing broken and after my upgrade I just pushed it back it in, of course I need to have it calibrated. The Speedometer was a real pain in the @!@$, they look great!

I searched Ebay and waited for a broken unit with a good needle or a functional unit at an affordable price. You do find them more often than you think. Seach for 911 VDO, Porsche VDO, 930 VDO, etc. you get it. Good luck.

I just broke the pin on my speedometer the other night. North Hollywood can fix it for $110 - $130. I think that is a bit pricey, but better than tossing the guage that I just put a new odometer gear in.
FYI, they told me the proper way to remove the needle is to pull it STRAIGHT up (no side-load) and twist it counter clockwise. There is an internal stop, so this will force the needle off the pin. |
Yeah, figures, i found that internal stop once i had it apart. A little too late then, Whoops!
I think i might send it out, unless i can find a broken one real soon. |
