Road trip from Victoria BC to San Diego CA
Hitting the road with two of my favourite things next week Wednesday and would like some more suggestions on Porsche friendly driving routes and must see places , shop tours along the way. So far we are doing a shop tour at Elephant Racing, a stop at the Porsche Experience centre in LA and of course Mulholland drive. We have done the 101 and hwy 1 route before, but that was before we got this car. We have 12 days to get there and back and plan to spend a few days in Oceanside with friends, so plan to do 300-450 miles per day and start early each day.
Thanks for any and all suggestions! ![]() |

You lucky ducks - we did that trip a few times 30 years ago with our baby son, but in a rental car. Would love to do it again in a 911. Fantastic scenery, friendly happy people and lovely memories. You people of the USA are especially blessed.
This might be an Australian "thing" but get some good selfies at Wankers Corner Oregon. ![]() |

So jealous! We were going to take the car for our Yellowstone road trip but opted to take the truck instead. Just not enough room in the 911 for everything. Have fun on the trip, take lots of pictures!!

Ferry to Port Angeles (where I was born). Spend a day in Pt. Angeles, 1/2 day on a drive out Hwy 112, 113, and back past Lake Cresent on Hwy 101. Afternoon in Olympic Nat Park to Hurricane Ridge and back. Stay at the Olympic Hotel, I did 2 nights ago. Eat at Chestnut Cottage for lunch or Breakfast.
Next, realize you see less than 10 miles of the Ocean driving Hwy 101 to Oregon. So, take scenic and uncongested Hood Canal after passing Sequim Bay and Discovery Bay to get to the Oregon border via this route: http://mapq.st/2rq5hWz Oregon, 101 and put up with the summer tourist traffic. Calif to Bay area: 101 to Legget and then Hwy to SF.....After Carmel area, you have to detour around Big Sur area.....Enjoy.

If you get close to McMinnville, Or, between Newberg and Lincoln City and need a place to crash for the night I have and empty bedroom with king size bed your are welcome to use.
I did the same trip, only the other way, from San Diego to Port Angeles and back in the early 70's in a 1957 Triumph TR3. Kent Olsen 971-267-0306

In CA I recommend driving 101 through the redwood forest (Avenue of the Giants) to right before Leggett take CA1 (PCH) to SF.
From SF to LA take 101 and before you get to Santa Barbara take CA154 (via Los Olivos/Solvang) from 101 to Santa Barbara. In LA besides Mullholland do Angeles Crest. Last edited by adias; 06-04-2017 at 09:28 AM.. |

101 is wide open and not really subject to mudslides.
HWY 1 is closed between carmel and cambria, all of big sur is inaccessible unless you drive in and back out from either side. massive mudslide that will likely keep the highway closed for a long time, some estimating a year or longer. bummer, i try to drive it at least once a year. not this year... |

If you are taking the ferry to the mainland first, stop by and see us! Just let me know you are coming!
Cheers

In the SF to Monterey area, spend some time going West on Hwy 92 to Hwy 35, to Hwy 9 to Santa Cruz. If you want the twisty option, do Hwy 35 to Hwy 84 to Hwy 1 south to Santa Cruz. If you want a guided tour, PM your Bay Area schedule!

A few suggestions:
Mulholland Road: I highly recommend starting south of Malibu, up Lagito Canyon road, and then join Mulholland. Do a Google maps fly over of Lagito and you will understand why. Guarantee you will want to do that a second time. I did Lagito Canyon Luftgekuhlt weekend and the road was in great shape. Angeles Crest Hwy, definitely! Check to see if the (winter gate) is open. I assume it would be by now. If so you can head all the way to Cajon junction. Since you are headed to Oceanside I recommend taking Angeles Crest to Cajon junction, 15 south to 215 then to Banning. OR take Angeles to the 39 south to Azusa, the 210 east to the 10 to Banning. From there the 243 south to the 74 to 371 Anza to 79 to Warner Springs then the 76 west to Temecula to Oceanside. Banning south is a great mountain route. After traveling from Victoria to Malibu, LA to Oceanside will likely be a let down. Never mind the traffic. Despite the added time taking this route, it will be worth it. If you choose to travel LA to Oceanside direct, take the 405 since is carpool lanes for most of the stretch LA past Irvine, the 5 does not. Encinitas, just south of Oceanside, the third Thursday of each month has Classic Car Nights. Worth checking out. Also worth stopping at Union or the Fish Market. If you need your car serviced, Charlies Garage in Encinitas. |

Jeff, I will be in your neighbourhood tomorrow late in the day and will try and make a point of stopping in. I'm not sure if you recognize my car but I believe you originally did the current mods back in about 2004!
