'87 California Smog

Hello, I have an '87 that just needed a California smog. I'm happy to say that it passed and all tests are below the max allowable but I've noticed that the 25 mph tests have all increase a bit from the last smog 2 years ago and the CO% is 4x higher. I have only put on 500 miles between the 2 smog tests and before this year's smog replaced the air filter. I'm just wondering what I should look at for the change....

Here are the numbers...
  • 2015 Test
  • %CO2 @ 15mph: 14.9
  • %CO2 @ 25mph: 14.9
  • %O2 @ 15mph: 0.1
  • %O2 @ 25mph: 0.1
  • HC @15mph 24
  • HC @25mph 18
  • CO% @15mph 0.13
  • CO% @25mph 0.11
  • NO @15mph 240
  • NO @25mph 170
  • 2017 Test
  • %CO2 @ 15mph: 15
  • %CO2 @ 25mph: 14.7
  • %O2 @ 15mph: 0.1
  • %O2 @ 25mph: 0.2
  • HC @15mph 32
  • HC @25mph 31
  • CO% @15mph 0.15
  • CO% @25mph 0.43
  • NO @15mph 305
  • NO @25mph 278

Hi Avale...i would start with .... drive it more often.
These car do not like to sit around .....500 m in 2 years why? Also what about changing the oil and fuel filter. You have the oil in it for 2 years?

The more you will drive it the cleaner it will run....

Oh, I change oil, fuel filter, etc annually but didn't mention that as I didn't think that would influence smog as much. Regarding lack of driving - I was surprised how little I have been driving it...

I'm with ivan. it needs to be driven more often. I see you are in PA and since I'm just down the peninsula from you in SV maybe we could work something out. I'm thinking I come to your house, take the car for a drive a couple times a month for a small fee and fuel costs...

my route would be up page mill to skyline north to alice's. from alice's (stopping and hanging is optional) go west on 84 to hwy 1 north to 92 west back to 280 south to PA. probably an hour & a half depending on if you/I/we were to stop for lunch or breakfast. get out by 8AM, leave the radio off and drive it like it was meant to be driven. I find few things less rewarding, and I raced 911's!
