What have you done with your center console

I feel like my center console could do with some modernisation. Instead of the cassette rack that currently sits there plus a couple of OEM switches that I dont use I wondered what I might put in there instead. Maybe a couple of gauges or a USB charger.

What have people done with theirs. Be great to get some pictures for inspiration.

I just removed the console in my brother's '79. Now that it's gone I think I've pinpointed it's best feature: lack of existence. Yeah, you stash junk in it, but having it gone is really nice, just like the early cars.

Center Console...........

Removed it completely and moved the two a/c switches to a panel where the ashtray used to live. I like it much better this way!

McLaren-TAG 06-11-2017 04:57 PM

Delete it.

I covered up the hole for the AC harness with a Porsche Crest sticker..

Gone gone gone! I took the shifter body and sanded it smooth then had it powder coated black also worth picking up new bolts for the shifter.

Kick it to the curb

Useless dead weight.

I had mine out for a while when I deleted the AC. Then I needed a place for the new gauges (air/fuel and bolts) and the seat heater switches (wife really likes that) so I decided to put it back in to hold all of this. I like it this way.

Hey, nice seats. Where did you get those from.

I like the idea of the gauges in the center console. What did you make the back plate from and how did you fix the plate into the console?

Bucketlist 06-12-2017 03:40 AM

PO custom built this console, I added the gauges.

Thanks Pete - the seats are standard sport seats that were reupholstered to my specs (but credit Singer, right). The gauges and switches are mounted on an aluminum 1/8" thick panel cut large enough to be a friction fit to the existing console with the vinyl cover. I installed two vertical alum square bars inside the original console with pure silicone to act as a backer. With the bars in place I simply force the gauge panel into the console till it bottoms out. It looks to be holding up very well.

Very professional job! I like the little electric seat buttons too. Overall a good use of the console IMHO.

Tremelune 06-12-2017 10:03 AM

I really like that ejector seat button.

Let me guess. You have the plastic covering on your remotes as we.
JK. Looks great.

Cook&Dunning 06-12-2017 02:39 PM

Haha - Well my mom had the plastic on the lamp shades for like 20 years when I was a kid. I had to fight the natural instinct.

john walker's workshop 06-12-2017 05:26 PM

I yanked mine. Kind of useless, other than a junk collector. Looks cleaner without it too.

I've been working on a couple different insert designs for a/c controls and gauges.

Arduino controlled AC with Nextion 2.8" display. Credit to John Lafitte for programming. (Absolutely no need for this thing. Was done for the journey---to see if it could be done. Anyone following build thread... I waited through winter and am now on verge of final install. Will get back to thread shortly.)

Bench test.
