Clutche pedal spring

I've got an 86 3.2. I was driving a couple of days ago and I heard loud metallic ping come from the pedal area, and felt a thud in the clutch pedal. Right after this the clutch pedal felt different and not as springy, and the throw length was inconsistent.

I took out the floorboard today and noticed that a piece of rubber was jammed between the spring and the body. After I removed this the clutch throw felt like normal, and looking at the mechanism I don't see anything obviously broken.

Maybe the piece of rubber was binding the spring somehow and that's what I felt/heard.

Does anything in the pics below look out of the ordinary?

This is the piece that was jammed in the clutch spring

Looks similar to this bump stop circled here:

That piece of rubber attaches to the top of the wooden floor board. You will see a medal piece on the wooden floorboard where you would insert it. If I remember correctly its a rubber stop for the clutch travel.

Thanks, I should have noticed that! :-)

Finally got back home last night to test drive after finding the clutch pedal rubber stop wedged by the clutch spring.

It still seems to randomly bind up to where I can only depress it maybe half way. Other times it works normally. Sitting in my garage it works normally, so I haven't been able to look at what's happening to see what the difference in action is like when it's working vs not.

I guess I'll try sticking a camera down there to watch as I drive to see if I can see what is going on.

I had my assembly rebuilt by Bruce... info on link below. Mine now looks like it came out of the factory. Inexpensive and he upgraded bushings and rubber pieces. Worth looking into if you're having binding issues and inconsistencies.
