Question Speedometer cable replacement?

Well the bouncing speedometer and noise is caused by the speedometer cable. I unplugged the speedometer and the noise persisted. I may try to remove the cable from the shield, clean and lubricate it first. If this does not work, then it looks like replacing it is the next step. I have not even tried to remove the cable from the shield yet, so I do not even know if this is an option.

I was searching the archives and have not seen any tips or articles on replacing the speedometer cable. Does anyone have any words of wisdom or advice as to the difficulty? I replaced the clutch cable and that was a breeze.

This is on a 1969 911T with the 901 gearbox if that matters.

Thanks

Gee, looks like I have the making of a tech tip here. I have my new cable and plan to install it in the next week or so. I will post a reply then.

I recently replaced one on a 72. I taped a piece of rope to the end of the cable and pulled out the whole thing from the back side. That way you tape the new cable on the rope and pull back up through the tunnel. I had the engine out of the car already so I had plenty of room.

Good luck!

For clarity,
Undo both ends
Tie or tape cord on one end and pull from the other.
Do you pull the old one out from the speedometer end?

Thanks

sounds easy in thoery, but it's a royal pita in application. it will hang up on multiple things as you pull it thru the tunnel. i've had to remove the shifter to guide it thru, as well as the e/brake assy, and the rear shift coupler cover on the tunnel. it also is held by several tabs inside the tunnel, that are bent over it. not one of my favorite jobs.

John

Thanks for the heads up. You have confirmed my suspicions that this is not an easy job. I did not think it was a complicated job but I figured it would be a pain after I looked at how the cable was routed. I plan to do this in two more weeks so I will document as much as I can and post it.

Thanks

Yea, definitely a royal PITA. I pulled the old one from the rear of the car and the new one through the speedo hole. Mainly because the speedo connection is smaller than the tranny connection, I figured it would be easier.
