New shift rod coupler bushings

Hi all,
I installed new shift coupler bushings in my 81SC easy enough. The car has a sein shifter and as it centers itself with springs Iam wondering about the adjustment process as descrided in the Bently manual and the youtube video. Both say to get the shifter vertical, rotate the coupler counterclockwise then move the shifter towards the left. With the sein shifter it does not want to stay left. I have all gears but not really good as it sometimes selects 4th instead of 2nd . Anyone know if the process varies because of the gated shifter ????

I'm sure Sein has instructions, but I'll tell you it's trial and error.
I recommend carrying two 13mm wrench and driving.....stop, adjust....drive, stop adjust. If you're getting all gears you're close.
I have a Rennshift and it has adjustments in it as well. I started as recommended with shifter vertical....turn coupler....but still had to do 4-5 tiny adjustments after. A little makes a difference.

I too have a 81-- I have always did as you posted but I keep the shifter to the left (drivers side) before turning the coupler to the left (passengers side) while facing the rear of the car. Use a bungee cord to hold the shifter. Remember it doesn't need to be jacked hard to the left side- just held as you make your adjustments

I read a few threads on how to do the adjustments. But in the end I just "fooled with it" until it felt right. There are only 2 degrees of freedom so it doest take long by trial and error. I only have a 4 speed so it may be easier for me however.

The hardest part for me was getting the freaking rubber boot back over the mechanisim. Surely there is a trick I am missing.

Good idea ernie I used a bungee cord to hold the shift lever across to the left and redid the adjustment and it seems really good. The manual says there should be a little movement when in 5th gear i do not have any ..is that a problem??

Here's a hint from JW I wish I'd seen when I was doing my adjustments;

If you are chunking past, or into, reverse on the 5th - 4th downshift - it's a forward or rearward (length) adjustment - not side-to-side.

Happy hunting,
Bill K
