Capturing audio while driving

My nephew picked up a drone recently and he's dabbling in video editing. What he's done so far is pretty impressive. We'd like to take the 911 out and get some footage, but the drone doesn't have audio, obviously. I've got a pretty decent digital audio recorder that I can attach to the car, but I'm not sure where to put it, or how to handle the wind noise. I'd like to capture the exhaust and engine sounds. Anyone have some tips on setups?

Try the back seat and see if you like it. The best for wind noise reduction is a dead cat.

I bought one of these:

For the same reason as you are looking into. You can run the long cord back to the exhaust area (outside) and tape the microphone there. No wind noise or very little.

I have a Tascam digital recorder that has an external mic port, but I also use my mic to plug into my Gopro Hero.....I drilled a small hole in the side of one of the plastic cases so I can mount the camera outside and place the mic where ever I want sound from (Usually the exhaust cuz it's the best sound ever..SS heat exchangers with Dansk Sport muffy at 6K RPM yes please.....)

Got any pics of your setup? How are you mounting the box and mic near the tail pipe?

I have placed the Gopro as anyone normally would with the suction cups provided and just run the long mic chord back in the drivers window (or what ever window is closest, since I film from the hood, roof or doors) then I run the mic chord out the rear side vent window and tape the chord using white duct tape (my car is white) along the roof seam back to the exhaust area and tape the mic there. That's all there is to it...

The mic I purchased at the link I sent, has a 6 meter chord (20 feet) so the mic can be placed just about anywhere regardless of the digital recorder or camera placement.
