The Canary Files: Rear view mirror mounting. (Hello!)
 

My old stick on the windshield rear view mirror has seen it's last days (glass has failed around the edges and it wobbles around). I like the look of the older shiny chrome mirrors so my lovely wife bought me one (she is a keeper!). What would be the best way to:

A: Remove the old "been stuck there for 48 years" mirror without cracking my windshield?

B: Attaching the new shiny mirror to the metal lip without destroying my headliner??!

I have a few ideas but those usually end in failure, much swearing and another much larger project to fix the failure.

Any suggestions before the blowtorch comes out would be appreciated.

I think all you have to do it drill two pilot holes and screw it on. I have a little 12 vdc to 5 vdc adapter mounted in the same place to power my dash camera. Just use short screws right through the vinyl and it will look fine. You can feel the metal easily. Just check that the visors still work OK for you. Blowtorch ?? Not sure best way to remove the glued on button, maybe stop by a glass shop to ask or better, get a new windshield. If its 30 years old it can't be in decent shape. Windshields are like motor oil, need periodic replacement.

Thanks I sent a message. I imagine he had the headliner out before doing the mirror install.

I was thinking of using M5 rivet nuts? Give the M5 machine screw something solid to mount to?

I think you could just drill and tap 3 holes; drilling the smallest holes possible to remove less material. Using rivnuts requires bigger holes. Maybe sticking tape to the headliner before drilling through it would give it more strength and keep it clean.

Please let us know what Brooke (rswannabe) replies - I've been thinking about doing this for a while also!

Sorry for the late reply, been out on a much earned vacation! Yes Brooke replied and I did the same, drilled three small holes and used short self tapping M5 screws into the holes. Mirror is solid and looks great!
