black film on rear?

hi guys,

yesterday while washing my car i noticed a black film all over the rear quarter panels and rear bumper.

i never noticed this before.

does anyone else have this problem?

is it normal? burned oil?

i don't think it is brake dust, could it be from the tires?

Funny, I just noticed the same thing on mine a couple of days ago; it's not really visible until you wipe your hand along the paint and collect enough to make it show. Dunno what it is, but I know I'm not leaking any oil--brand-new 911SC engine, tight as a drum. So it's either brakes or tires, and I haven't been driving mine hard enough that I'd suspect tire dust.

This started on my car when I went to different brake pads.

Brake dust...I really started having a problem with that when I went with Orange Pagids, great pad, lots of dust...the swirl pattern with a whale tail does not help either....

I've notice it on my '85 Carrera for quite a while. I don't think it's brake dust or else you'd see more from the front brakes.
I'm convinced its from the fat rear tires. Had a softer pair of tires on the rear & noticed it a lot more.

jlex.

I have a thought...does it look like some sort of "liquid" chemical? Like when you wipe it with a cloth-does it seem to spread it around? If this is the case: SMELL your rear quarter panels. Does it smell like gasoline? If so, you probably have a fuel leak in one of the fuel lines or fittings. My 85 had this problem, and when I would wash the car-the rear quarters would come out "cloudy" unless I REALLY wiped it down many times. Found a fuel leak, fixed it, no more problem.

It might be simple if you have a whale tail. my 86 gets it from the black rubber of the whale tail.

i have the retractable C2 wing.

i'll check again, but so far it sounds like it may be from the tires. i got new yoko avs intermediates and don't remember it before them.

or it could be brake dust, but it is not on the front fenders. and not terribly bad on the wheels.

i do leak oil, but it is not slimy.

as Stephan Wilkinson mentioned, if you wipe along the rear quarters your hand will be black.

does anyone else have this?
i don't thimk it is normal.

I have the identical black dust on the rear of my car only. I posted to this board awhile ago about the same thing but no one ventured a good cause. It concerned me at first as being a smoky engine, but I only burn about 1QT of oil every 2500 miles and only puff a little smoke on start up about every 5 starts. What is it?

Have you recently washed and detailed your car?

Have you put any type of gloss on the tires....tail....trim.....such as TireWet, or other? When I took the car to be detailed after the last winter, I noticed that for 2 weeks it looked great! Then it rained....not so great anymore. They used pure silicone and it took a while to get it all off. I'll do it myself from here on out.

Just my thoughts.

If you wipe the quarter panels with a soft white cloth, the "black dust" will come off completely without smearing (therefore, its not oil or exhaust). The consistency is closest to, say, Xerox copier toner.
I still say it's from the tires... probably lamp black or some other carbon type of additive to the tires that's just being thrown off thru natural wearing action. Don't worry about it.

jlex.

My '86 gets this behind the rear tires only.

When I first bought the car and noticed this, I thought I had badly aligned rear end and that it was just scrubbing the rubber off and leaving the residue. However, many miles proved that the tires where not wearing fast.

My '77 has never done this. '77 has 205 all around, '86 has 245 on the rear. Stands to reason the '86 should have more rubber residue scrubbing off.

I've had 3 sets of tires on the '86 and notice that some tires left more residue than others.

The conclusion I have come to is that is rubber residue, it is not necessarily indicative of a problem.

If your rear end is properly aligned and you are not shreading tires, don't sweat it.

Red face

Normal grime from daily driving. They do suck from the back.

Road grime. Remember, you're not the only one on the road leaving rubber, brake dust, carbon and all the other debris created by cars and trucks. It's all in suspension and sticks to clean cars more than any others.

Question

No clue, but I noticed alot of posts by people in the Northeast area. Any chance of similar road surfacing materials? Any consistent change in regional weather conditions? Do the highway depts 'treat' road surfaces before winter? Just wondering. I live in California. The only strange things we allow on our roads are fruits & nuts.

Hey Scupper: You don't have a corner on the fruit and nuts market...I drive the Long Island Expressway every day so I'll add fruit and nuts to the list of road debris here.

Fruits, Nuts...and don't forget the flakes! My vote goes to road surface rubber debris and other dusts. It happen to my early 911 too, just not as dramatically as to wider bodied cars.
