71 Targa Soft Window update

For those of you that didn’t see the thread a couple of days ago, I found and bought a 71 Targa T Soft Window roller. The PO was nice enough to trailer the car the 100 mile to my house - heck of a nice guy.

Well, there’s good news and bad news. First the good:
-The exterior is shell is very solid with only 2 rust through spots (RF fender low and a hole in front of the hood where one of the snaps was).
-The body appears to have never been wrecked and all of the gaps are very tight and consistent. Doors close with the Porsche thunk.
- Most of the soft window hardware is usable. The levers work, the upper hoop seems in good shape but the lower hoop is rusted through.
- All of the electrical is in tact - including the engine console.
-The car was last registered in 1979. The odometer shows 72400 which very well may be original miles.
-Targa bar cover is perfect.
-All exterior trim pieces and lenses are in tact.
-The rockers are in good shape
-The door jambs are in good shape.
-I think it's the original color - code # 8410H.
- More to come.

The bad:
-The interior is totally trashed (exposed to elements for 15 + years).
-There is rust is the front gas tank support - not all the way through, just weak.
-The pan under the pedal cluster is rusted through.
-The tunnel over the shift coupling is rusted.
-More to come.

This is all I’ve been able to ascertain today. It appears that the rust has come from water sitting in the low places in the pans rather than from salt or dirt in cavities. I remain hopeful that the rest of the structure/longitudinals (what the heck is a longitudinal anyway), are sound. More info to come as discovered.

Mark -

Nick Moss in another current thread indicated that replacements are available for the pedal metal panels.

Is that a sportomatic car? Do you plan to keep it a sporto?

I like the color!

Nice find Mark. The 71's are a fairly rare bird. -- Curt
