Here's a front view with my black headlight rims. I like the look a lot. Note the lack of a passenger side mirror. This was apparantly a (heavy) option back in 1978:

Very nice jasper. I like your style.

I especiallly like the removal of the bumper pads. Those things blow. How did you attach the ends of the rubber strip? I just left mine off.

I'd like to remove the rockers as well, but I don't like the glaring look of the brass piping running along the doorsill.

Great color and the ducktail looks awesome. I think i'm leaning toward the ducktail myself.

Being that your car is an SC, I imagine the curb weight of your car is close to that of the CS. With a little more grunt from the upcoming 3.0 i'm sure it'll be just like a CS.

I drilled a small hole through the rubber, through the metal strip that is inside the rubber, then through the bumper. Then I bolted the rubber strip to the bumper. It turned out much better than I thought it would since the rubber closed in over the head of the bolt. It's virtually impossible to see the holes.

I plan to paint them black. They'll blend in better, and black surfaces dissipate heat better. the other option is to polish the brass tubes. That would actually look pretty slick I think. The old RS Carreras all had the tubes exposed...it's very functional looking. Lord knows they'll cool the oil better flapping around in the wind like that.

I weighed in recently at about 2400 lbs - lighter than a Clubsport. This new engine is going to SCREAM. My friend is importing a clubsport from Germany in March. He enlisted me to help him dial the car in. I'll find out first hand how my car compares against a CS.

cheers

Thanks for the description of the strip attachment. I bet you could get a couple more of the tiny plugs that are on the other end of the strip if the hole showed too much? Thanks.

I polished (actually just removed all the crud the factory applies) my oil cooler lines last year. They do look functional alright. I guess maybe it doesn't look right against red to me? I dunno. I'll try leaving them off awhile and see if I warm up to it.

Motor sounds like a hoot. That CS doesn't have a chance.

Is this the right place to put the jackstands?

I will be deleting my stereo next month, and very possibly removing my rocker panels. Finally, my mechanic is in the process of building a 3.0 engine with S cams, webers, MSD ignition, JE 9.5:1 pistons, old style exhaust, and sport muffler.

I'm seriously thinking of putting a Carrera script on the side.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa... DCP_0108s.jpg

replacing it with a fiberglass panel,
I should be well under the CS weight as well.
here are a few shots.. I to had the black lamp rings I just stripped them to repaint them as they were chipped up good.

No worries!

The yellow stands are merely holding up the oil cooler lines as I hadn't yet fastened the brackets under the doorsill to the body.

The red stands are the ones holding the car up. And yes, they're rather flimsy looking. But the contact surfaces of the posts are flatter and contact more of the car. I don't like the horseshoe shape of the yellow stand post.

jwetering 01-29-2003 01:56 PM

Eric - it looks like you're a way ahead of me with you interior, and I am totally stoked on that light grey colour. Real classy, and a little less "splashy" than my minerva blue..

Is that an RS carpet kit? I'm considering one of those. I've got a reclining Sparco race seat on the driver's side, but just a stock vinyl seat for the passenger. I guess I should pony up some bucks to set that straight too. Looks like you filled and painted the holes left by the bumper pads....there's gotta be a couple of grams of filler involved there - call me crazy, but that's weight I don't want to haul around everywhere that I go :) I even removed that little light in between the seats which shows what direction to pull the heater handles. There's another gram (actyually the light was reflecting in the windshield and I found it distracting). I've installed a 1973 exhaust system in mine, but the heater boxes are getting a little thin. Time for SSI's once the pain in my wallet from this engine build dies down.

Lastly, I do have a sunroof, but when the car is painted one day I will delete it. One of the damned cables broke last year and I haven't got around to replacing it.

And KTL - those oil lines look fine to me...

Tom - did I see your car at CT Automotive last week? I hear it is one of the only CS 911s with a sunroof. If that was your car, I should let you know that Don let me take it around the block on a test drive. Not really - but I did look at the engine and comment on the fact that it needs to get some miles on it.

Eric Mckenna 01-29-2003 02:36 PM

Jasper,
Yeah it's my $14.00 home version of RS carpet I bought a few yards of Perlon felt from a factory behind where I work and installed it all myself it's glued to the bare metal.. .. loads of fun.. hahaha.
I to have removed all the little lamps and lights from mine so the tiny bit of filler I used is not that bad
;)
I am also going to remove the whiper on the passanger side and maybe even the fluid sump and motor.. I hear it's like another 14lbs.. and i don't drive in mud and if it rains the one whiper will be enough i don't need windshield cleaner .. so I have lots to still remove to lighten her up even more... yep my sunroof works but i NEVER open it so it's GONE as well.
you and I will have some mean as SC's when we are finished..
i can already out run all my friends that have the Carrera with 3.2's they weigh TOO much.
I don't think the Clubsport will stand a chance against ya either...
keep us in the know on how the car is comming along ok..
i love to hear of others that have the same Ideas I have for thier porsches..
light, mean, loud and fast!!! just the way the were meant to be!! right jasper!
haha

Hey all - thanks for the comments.

I'll try to answer the questions raised.

- The car is the original "Metallic Silver" (S7). Its hard to get a great picture in high sun conditions. I Photoshpped it a little but if you lighten it too much it washes out the contours.
- The ride height is 24 3/4 front and 24 rear; I just got it from the shop where I had it corner balanced. Also recently added 7x16 front Fuchs, Cambermeister strut brace, K&N cone filter, 930S steering wheel. Handling is now even better! I like the unpainted H4 headlight rings; just a taste thing. Can shoot it later if I change my mind.
- I am a regular visitor to Jason's excellent website; I routinely correspond with him and other CS owners. Right now I belive there are three '88 CS's in his area (Southern Calif).
- There were 28 CS's sold in the US; 22 in '88 and 6 in '89; mine is S/N 5081, the 21st one in '88. My research indicates the US CS's came in guards red(1), black (3), metallic silver (2), GP white (14), diamond blue metallic (1, Jason's car), dark blue (3), I don't know the colors of the 4 remaining cars. Some were custom colors.
- As far as I know, my car is the only CS with as sunroof. the original owner was a Porsche salesman and made a special request to Stuttgart. Obviously, not the ideal for a weight-conscious car, but it does come in handy on hot days.

More pics and info about my CS are on my Pelican owner's page.

Thanks,

Glasgow 911SC 01-29-2003 03:16 PM

Kevin,
Man your car is clean!

Is the plate at the top of the shock absorber new? If so, where did you buy it?

KTL 01-29-2003 07:01 PM

Chris,

The strut mount is a factory part. I just bought a new one when I refreshed the front suspension. I don't see them in Pelican's catalog, but i'm sure they can get them for you (part # 911-341-018-00). Not cheap though. Mine were $98 ea.

You can upgrade to the monoball cartridge (I think Pelican carries the Weltmeister and the Elephant Racing types) which eliminates the rubber bushing within the mount and replaces it with a spherical bearing. Might be a little harsh though. Never driven a car with them.

Glasgow 911SC 01-30-2003 02:40 AM

Thanks for the info Kevin. Mine are fairly rusty (its about the only part that hasnt been covered in underseal) but $98 each is a lot of money for such a small part. I'll have to look into it.

KTL 01-30-2003 05:18 AM

Chris,

If the bushings are still in good shape, you could remove the mounts and have them mediablasted. Then you could paint them?

Just a thought.

Glasgow 911SC 01-30-2003 09:27 AM

Hmm.
Might be worth a try Kevin.
