Red Light Green Light Head Scratcher
![]() I was changing the oil on my friends 1970 911T and he mentioned that his Generator light was on. His looks like the above gauge exactly and the green light on the top is illuminated almost all of the time. I assumed it was a loose belt for the alternator but after googling for a while I have to say I am stumped as to what the indicator light is actually alerting me to. I have read that it is either the parking brake, low oil pressure or generator. The owners manual I found from a 1970T stated that it was, well you tell me: Oil Temperature and Pressure Gauges The multi-gauge unit contains an oil temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, alternator indicator lamp, and hand brake indicator lamp. The gauges and indicators work only when the ignition is turned on. The oil temperature gauge registers degrees Centigrade (° C); the oil temperature must not exceed a maximum of 265° F (130° C). If the temperature should exceed the limit, slow down and take car to a workshop to determine the cause of the overheating. Improper ignition timing or a slipping V-belt can cause excessively high oil temperatures. I have tried to diagnose this, but I don't know where to start. I can't see your image but there are two warning lights on the oil gauge: The upper one is the brake/parking brake and the lower one is the generator. There is no oil pressure warning light.
If it's the upper one, take the boot off the parking brake and there is a small screw at the back that connects the ground and can cause the parking brake light to either turn on or off during operation.

Well hello stealer of my C2S! I did remove the parking brake and tried to ground out the lead to turn the lights on and off but it just stayed illuminated the whole time. If it is for sure the parking brake, I will need to find a sort in the wire I suppose. My guess is that the light is illuminated when the lead is grounded.

I hear that car went to Seattle then Canada. Yeah, top light is the parking brake. Mine has always been finnicky. I adjusted it a few times and now it only illuminates when the parking brake is engaged. I guess I got lucky. First time it came on, I thought I had an oil pressure issue and freaked out because it's right above "OIL."

Ha! Not a bad idea, but if I did want to resolve the issue, can someone show me the wiring diagram for it?
