Can I remove 80s era cell phone antenna?

79 SC. Couldnt find pics of this unit anywhere here or on the net. Id like to remove it, but don't want to damage the glass. Is there a hole in the glass between the inner and outer pieces? Hope not! Appreciate some advice.

yes you can remove the antenna.
there is no hole in the glass.
these were installed with double stick tape.
razor blade and Windex will do the job.
careful on the inside if they are on rear defrost lines .

Aerial antennae removal........

Use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm the surrounding area and slowly pry the plastic mount during the process. Don't worry about the applied heat. As long as you don't do a rapid thermal shock on the glass, you can not crack or damage the high temperature silicone glass. The key is gradual heating and move the heat gun constantly around the mounting area. What you want to achieve is reach the temperature before Tg (transition temp.) of the glue or epoxy. This is also the same way to remove the rear view mirror mounting base on your windshield. A razor blade scrapper will be very helpful. Or attempt to use a razor scrapper first without heat first. Depending on the degree or quality of adhesion of the glue, you might not need heating.

Another tip: Find someone with experience in making golf clubs. Same process for removing old club heads.

Tony

You can also use dental floss or fishing line to saw between the glass and the antenna. An easy trick to remove it without having to pry. Adding heat is a good idea as well.

I've removed several badges off new cars this way. Works a charm and requires minimal clean up.

It came right off with a thin smooth blade and a little windex.

So Cool, people actually resorted to doing this: JC Whitney must have sold a few.
I remember one brand was called the "Phoney".

Fake car phone antenna from the 1987 JC Whitney catalog

Yeah, so cool a PO drilled through the Targa bar on my '85 to install a pig tail antenna. The car was in South Florida at the time, so it is sort of expected. ; ).

I feel your pain..... PO had drilled a hole right in the center most top portion of our targa bar........ Curses!

He just had to have one of those cool-a$$ bag phones of the day. I can picture him now, driving in his Carrera poser yammering on his bag phone with the targa top off telling his buddies just how cool he must look. LoL everything on the car screamed "Carrera" except the 3.0 SC engine.......... Needles to say I removed the tail and Carrera script. Still figuring the best targa bar fix though.

Yup, got one too on my targa bar. I'd just put a plastic plug, but they made the hole asymmetric. So, it's at a specialised shop waiting to be TIG welded, ground, and polished. I'm holding my breath waiting for the quote....

Anybody got a car phone they want to sell? There was one at one point as evidenced by some mounting holes.

Would love love love to reinstall it for looks. Total 80's.

Looked on ebay and all I could find were bag phones....

If you had a Porsche in the 90's you had a cell phone in it. Period!
If you had any car in the 90's, you had a cell phone in it. Period!
If you didn't have a cell phone in your car in the 90's, you had a fake cell phone antenna. Period!
Peer pressure is a mofo when they can sell fake cell phone antennas and people actually buy them.
The fake cell phone antenna company now makes spinning hub caps.
Anyone that still has a cell phone antenna on their car in 2017 must be 90 years old or older. Lol
