Excessive smoking

I went to test drive an 88 Carrera three weeks ago and noticed that it smoked excessively for quite awhile, 2 miles maybe. I was only able to drive it around the man's subdivision, not on a major road and the car did not get to full operating temp. It has not been registered for about two years so I assume it has been sitting the majority of that time. It shows only 65k miles. The smoke did seem to clear up as I got to the end of the short drive. Bailed on it at the end, but it is still for sale. I know about weak valve seals but this was much more smoke than that I suspect. Any ideas would be very helpful. I do miss the enjoyment of my 88. Thanks in advance, Paul.

Hi it would be nice to talk to the seller if he had just perhaps overfill the car with oil.
Sitting for any 911 is no good so it is also possible that it will clear out after driving more.
But first check the oil level ...then at least one more time start in the morning but the seller has to make sure he does not start it before you come for a road test.

I have done valve job on 1987 Carrera with only 28 000(more then one) miles all is possible...especially 87 but 88 should not have this problem.

Ivan

btw what is the price if i may ask?

I did check oil level and was just below first mark on stick but not at full operating temp.
The car was, I believe, stone cold when I got there.
$33,500 but it has a salvage title from before he purchased it. Steel turbo fenders and fiberglass bumpers. I might still offer, and I think he would take $30k. But only with PPI first.

hi...try to negotiate and price in which you could have a discount for potential valve job...you will see?...in another words go for it you love the car already and we live only once;-)..so you can erase "the not forgotten"

Paul,

$33K for a car with salvage title? What is so attractive with this car that you are willing to pay this much? Add a little bit more on your budget and look for a good car with clean title.

Sort of. Have other cars for that. Don't think it needs 3k. Didn't last time I did my other car and that was in Florida with mega humidity. Everything is there, just needs tweaking I think. Not afraid of that.
Not looking for investment just a driver. My brother will get it eventually.

Paul,

That's a good looking car. If you really like this one, I would try to bargain a little bit for the price. It is only money and life is too short. Have fun with this one.
