Help With Tank in Driver Side Wheel Well

Can anyone tell me what this tank is? It sits behind the bumper in the drivers side wheel well. I'm pretty sure that it's the tank for the high pressure cleaner for the headlights.

When I make a hard right turn the tire rubs on the tube to the tank, so I need to correct it. I just bout the car - 88 Targa. Not sure if this is a common problem. Thanks.

It is windshield washer fluid. You can jack up the front, remove the wheel to gain access to it. There is that fastener on the top that you can see behind the small horizontal hose if the tank has moved. You can fasten the hose out of the way once the wheel is removed. That hose goes to teh fill port in the gas capp area. Are you running larger than stock wheel diameters by any chance?

Thanks. I am running stock wheels and tires. The hose seems tight so I will remove the wheel and try to fasten it. There are some other hoses back there too. I'll get a better look once I remove the wheel.

There is another tank in front of that one which does headlight washers I think. I removed all that for simplicity.

That may be the source of your issue and that of many others.

Are you talking about a low speed, full lock lefty? Have you changed wheel/tire set up?

Stock wheel and tire size. It rubs when I lock out full to the right.

I think you may have removed the tank to collect fuel vapours (expansion tank). There is no separate container for the headlight washer, just a separate pump built into the reservoir. If your car reeks of gas in the morning this would be the cause.

I've run 27" diameter off road tires on my car before and they didn't rub the tank. I did have to move the fender extension (behind the bellows) forward about 3/16ths forward.

Rubbing won't happen unless the tank is out of place.

You are correct it is part of the fuel expansion system. I have no fuel smell. That tank is outta here. Perhaps this is another of those systems mandated by government that further added weight and complexity to these cars. More info here if anyone is interested:

Fuel expansion tank replacement question
