missing fan belt shim: ok to drive or better to stay in the garage?

HI all,
I've just replaced the fan belt with a new one. I have discovered that I was running only with 5 shims (reading on the forum they should be 6).

I've ordered a new set of shims, in the meanwhile can I drive the car or a too tight belt can damage the fan ? At the moment I have avoided to over-tight the fan nut.

Also how can I be sure the fan belt has the right tension ?
The old belt was surely too loose but the new one (only with 5 shims) seems too tight

thanks in advance

You need all 6 shims to ensure you do not bottom out the nut and damage the alternator thread.

I would not drive it.

Also, you move the shims to either between the pulley halves or outside of the outer one to adjust the belt tension. You should be able to deflect it with your thumb.

When I replaced my fan belt for the first time a few years ago.
I did not realize one of them fell down in the well below the lower pully.
Those shims are real thin.
I was baffled when I only counted five.
I put the belt on and could not get the tension right.
Think goodness for flash lights.

I searched for a hidden shim in the lower pulley zone but I was unlucky ... probably it has gone lost some hears ago when the alternator was rebuilt...
