Front suspension question

I had to cut off the tow hook on the right front retaining plate that supports the front of the A arm. The tow hook was folded over (not me, previous owner) the bolt and I wanted to remove the bar that protects the forward condenser. I removed all of the a/c a long time ago and that bar was bugging me. Can I remove the front retaining plate without messing up the alignment? If so should the car be on the ground or jacked up? I would like to grind the rest of the tow hook smooth. I was surprised how flimsy the condenser bar is, it weighs 2.5 lbs.

I have an 86 and it was bent a bit by the previous owner as well. Must be common.

If you are concerned, make a few pencil reference marks or better still some liquid paper so you can reassemble exactly where it was

You can remove it without messing up the alignment, but jack up the car so that the wheel on that side is in the air, that way the torsion bar won't be loaded and you can remove the three (or two remaining) bolts.
