upgrading stereo to later model with cd player

Will a later model Porsche stereo with cd player fit in a earlier model Porsche 911(1984 Carrera)? I see many later model Porsche stereos with cd player (such as the Boxster) on ebay and wonder if they would fit in the earlier 911s radio dash opening.

Why?
You can get a better aftermarket unit that is cheaper and new.

Well, I dont like the looks of the new units on the market....they dont "blend in" well with the rest of the dash.

I too like the "fitting in" with the look of the interior, but I wanted a CD player.

I got a CDR-220 that is a easy slide-in replacement for the stock single-DIN Blaupunkt in my '87. I also obtained the plug-in adapter cables (no splicing required).

Since I put the stock radio back in recently (to return the car to 100% original in preparation for eventual sale), I'm looking to sell the CRD-220. PM me if you are interested.

Take a look at this:

I have a CDR-220 also. It has a great sound to it. I have the Bluetooth adapter, and one of the nice things about this unit is you can buy an RCA out plug for it to add an external amp(like a subwoofer)

I have a continental in my 86 as well. I love the old school/new look.

I have the Becker CDR 220 as well. It fits in the existing radio opening in the dash. One thing to note is that you have to get the reverse face plate for it or you won't be able to read the display.

You're gonna miss the cassettes....;)

Barrpete brings up a good point about the reverse faceplate.

The CRD-220 I now have available has the reverse display option, and the additional display viewing angle option (ref. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/545727-cdr-220-fighting-bling-one-radio-at-a-time.html ).

Again, ourv12 PM me if you are interested., or if you just want more information about what this looks like in the dash.

I also have CDR-220 in my '84 and I love it.

It looks right at home in the dash, mine says Porsche instead of Becker but same unit.. You do have to reverse the face-plate.....there's a great guy at SW Stereo that does it pretty reasonably, he also provides the harness.

I've converted two of them for my 3.2's over the years. I have a plug that I routed through the glove that plugs into my phone. I stream through that.

A small clean amp, tweeter and mid in the door and small bass box in the back and it kills.

The face hinges from the bottom for CD access and it rubs the lighter and fog switches when I open it but I rarely use the CD anymore.

Big thumbs up from me.

Hands-down the CDR220. See here for what I did:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/959026-cdr-220-bluetooth-install.html

Make sure not to get anything later than the CDR220. The next generation CDR23 has certain features that will make it more or less unusable in earlier cars. This is mainly due to the anti-theft protection needing to communicate with other controllers in the car.

The CDR220 was the last of the units where the radio code can be easily obtained and it has the nice AUX IN feature.

To avoid that, you could get the Becker CR-220. Same as the CDR-220, but with a cassette player and not a CD. That should keep the nostalgia machine fed.

Just remember to keep a Bic pen handy to wind up the excess tape that's been pulled out and is lying all over your lap... ;)
