one of the valve cover screws backed out??
one of the nuts is apparently stuck on the threaded bolts that holds the valve cover on.
(looks like someone put Loctite on it). Any ideas on how to fix this? the threaded bolt is in decent shape, but don't want to damage it in trying to get the nut off.

Just taking a shot in the dark here, but couldn't you just double nut the other end and use two wrenches to back off the nylock but that's stuck?

Not uncommon, esp. if a nyloc "locking" nut is used. Remove stud and nut to complete your valve cover removal then double-nut the stud and pull off the "stuck" nut. Use again the double-nut method to reinsert the stud into its thread.

If you're talking about the nut onto a stud, you'll need two extra nuts to put on the other side. tighten them against each other like this (Same thing for taking out studs from the block):
![]() Then just crack it loose with two wrenches. If you need more explanation let me know. |

The two nuts need to be tightened down AGAINST each other quite tight using two opposing same sized open ended wrenches. Then holding the inner nut, you should be able to back the nylock nut off the other end.

You'll need to find two regular (non-unlock) nuts that fit on the stud....

Nylock nuts will still work, but you still need two of them. Oh, look, theres 33 other ones that you just took of the valve covers - you're just gonna throw them away anyhow.
Wrench two of them on, tighten them together and hold the one closest to the stuck one with some vice grips and turn the stuck one off.

ok... I got it off.... I see what the problem is with the nylon lock... I would always get one nut stuck on... eventually, after constant trial and error, I was able to have the last nut on just tight enough that I had to grab the stud with some pliers to pull screw the last nut off.
Now the question is.... How do I put the stud back in without it risking the nut getting stuck on it and backing the stud out again when trying to take it off??

Like jdub said above, now you double nut the outside, thread it in, break the two nuts apart, and spin them off by hand. I still say this is much easier with non-nylock nuts.

Yeah, non-nylock nuts would be much easier, but many people don't have the right size kicking around, and he's got lots of the nylock nuts after removing the valve covers. But like you said about double locking the outside after threading the stud back in works just fine, albeit with the added PITA of the nylocks.
