Is this a rare VDO 180mph speedometer for UK 911 Carrera RS?

I received this in a box of race parts that came with a 1970 911S which I recently purchased. It was alongside a genuine 2.8 RSR 10,000 RPM tachometer (part number 911 641 304 00, confirmed to be a genuine 2.8 RSR part elsewhere on Pelican). According to a previous owner, the gauges were bought at a dealer in the UK in late 1973, but I have no documentation to back that up. The dates stamped into the housing reads 8/73 (see pics) and the ink stamp reads 9/73, so these are definitely of that vintage.

More pics here:

I believe that this is a very rare 180mph speedometer for a UK spec 1973 911 Carrera RS or RSR. It has the warning light for the parking lamps at the top of the gauge which indicates a genuine RS speedometer. See this thread on the 911S board:

http://www.early911sregistry.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10215

The km/h Carrera RS speedometer part number is confirmed to be 911 641 506 00, but this mp/h one has part number 911 641 506 29. Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine RS or RSR Speedometer? If it is, I imagine it's very rare, as only the UK uses MPH and had Carrera RSs delivered. I don't even know if you could get an RSR in the UK, and if it would have a speedo.

Thanks for your help. Just so you know, this speedometer and the genuine 2.8 RSR 10,000 RPM Tachometer will be going on eBay. Because I'm having to ask for the kindness of you experts, the proceeds from the auctions will be donated to a medicine fund for those who can't afford it at a remote jungle clinic in Palawan, Phillipines where a good friend of mine is a nurse.

Porsche Crest

The September date stamp puts it into the '74 production model time frame, so it wouldn't be for an RS, but rather a 1974 RSR or ROW Carrera 2.7, which is also confirmed by the color scheme change at the center of the needle/pointer.

Ditto to Warren...

Pre '73 speedos had a shiny aluminum cap in the centre 'hub' of the needle.

There's a guy on another thread who had a genuine RSR 10K tach which was paired with a 300 KPH speedo believed to be an RSR part, numbered 911 641 503 29(again very similar to mine: 911 641 506 29). They made RSRs in 1974 Correct? Could it be from a '74 UK RSR?

The part doesn't show up in the PET...wouldn't a ROW Carrera 2.7 part show up there? It's also odd that my RSR 10K tach has the 8/73 housing stamp and ink stamp but has the silver button on the needle (see the pics on my site). This speedo has 8/73 stamped into the housing and a 9/73 ink stamp though...perhaps this is the month of the switchover?

Thanks again.

Make that pre-74 instruments with aluminum cap in the center ...

This thread with 1973 RSR pics confirm that the 2.8 RSR used the instruments with aluminum center pointers:

'73 R&T RSR vs 911S Track Test ...

Yep, 1974 RSR ... for the speedometer!

That part number (91164150629) DOES show up in PET as being used on a '74-'77 911. The first listing is for the ROW '74 Carrera 2.7 and 180 mph speedometers were later used on turbos in some markets. It may have been an option in some countries. It has all of the cosmetic changes made to the gauges for the '74 model year.

Whether it was used on a '74 RS 3.0 is sort of a moot point, when you consider that it wasn't limited to that car. I doubt many '74 RSRs used one, as nobody really needs a speedometer in a race car. I see RSRs with that hole blanked off, or filled with another gauge that they perceived as useful.

As with 10k tachs, for years Porsche cranked them out as spare parts and many people bought them. I remember, in the late 80's or early 90's, some of the aftermarket parts suppliers were blowing these things out the doors at a pretty good discount, just to sell them off.

Sometimes people put a label on these parts that shouldn't be there. I'd only pay silly money for an "RSR" part if it came with the rest of the RSR attached.

Good luck with the sale,
JR

My PET page looks like this, and it doesn't show my part number. What page did you find it?

Select the ROW catalog, '74-'89 911, then the Function button. Select ATP, input the part number into the box, check the "All Porsche" box and hit enter. It will tell you where the part was used.

The version of PET that I use is an earlier one. When Porsche supercedes a part number, new versions of PET drop the old one on the diagram. It can make it difficult to trace obsolete parts.

Hope this helps,
JR

Wow! I always enjoy finding a post by Warren (Early_S_Man) when I scroll through the Pelican site in the morning.
Welcome to the forum. You might consider posting a WTB ad on the 911 classified section.

Wow this brings back memories! If only I still had all of the parts and cars I did back then. I still had my mint '67 911S special ordered black with original paint and 32,000 miles. Thought I hit the lottery when I sold it for $65k in 2007. Those were the days!

To the OP, these days it's easier and much cheaper to have North Hollywood Speedometer reface and recalibrate a stock tach or speedo to match your needs. It only costs a couple hundred bucks and will be indistinguishable from the original. The only reason to seek out an original is if the date and part number stamps on the back mean a lot to you. Like thousands of dollars a lot.

I'm reviving an older thread here. I've got in my possession the following speedometer. Looking at possibly letting it go. Does anyone have an accurate value on something like this? Pics below are of my actual speedometer. Thanks for any info you can give me. I'm not up to speed on my early 911 stuff...

Date stamp 74?

If so that is a speedo for 1974/1975 ROW Carrera 2.7.

Value around 600 USD.
