Toyo Proxes T1R vs. Bridgestone RE11s
I've settled on buying one of these two tires in sizes 225/50/16 245/45/16. The Toyo's are about 2/3 the price, are lighter and slightly less overall diameter. I'm looking for real world driving experience on each for spirited road use. Which has better turn in? grip?
I generally only use car in nice weather although I have gotten caught in a thunderstorm or 2. As always, your input is appreciated and valued. |

T1R is a pretty old tire design in a very different class than RE-11. It would probably compare well with Bridgestone S-04 or Hankook V-12. A decent if not remarkable, low cost, sport tire. I have no personal experience with them but comparisons are pretty telling:
Tire Test: The Quick and the Tread Comparison Tests - Page 4 - Car and Driver RE-11 is a different animal with a lot more grip both wet or dry. This is my choice for a quality street tire that has the ability to run track days without overheating badly. I have been on these for about 10 months and like em a lot. Others in this class: RS-3, Dunlop Direzza Star Spec, Rival, Yoko AD-08. Tire Test Results : Testing the New Extremes of Extreme Performance Summer Tires

Are you scrubbing your tires squealing on the streets?

I just put a set of the re-11s on my 70 911 and so far I really like them. I mostly only drive in nice weather but living in Washington, I do sometimes get stuck in the rain. Haven't had them in standing water yet but in just damp conditions I couldn't get them to slide in a corner. I was running Michelin pilot sport a/s plus tires before and I didn't notice any difference in road noise from a daily driver standpoint. A little spendy but so far so good.

Just put re11s on my 930. On the track, I can't get them to squeal... they grip like crazy...
My prior tires were kuhmo ectasas, which I really liked. Good grip. They did squeal in almost every turn at high speed but were very predictible, and it was fun sliding the car around. The re11, in contrast, don't squeal. They just stick. |

Ok just to be clear - the RE11's are better in wet/rain than the TR-1's?

I like that idea. How are you storing them?

They appear from the tread pattern to be very different tires. RE11's are used by many as track tires and the very blocky tread will most likely hold up much better to aggressive cornering. That TR1 is something I don't see mentioned much and I would guess is much better for rain and possibly noise but no confirmation. Toyo models that have a tread similar to the RE11's are called track tires. Bridgestone has no "track" tires listed on tire rack and are normally the more pricey option but if they have your sizes, no-one ever complains about them.
