Original paint question, experts?

A link in another thread revived some questions I've had; is there an ID anywhere on car or in docs that specifies brand of original paint? Or were all Porsches painted w/ Glasurite always? Seems to me that I had heard that Sikkens or PPG may have been used also at times, any experts know for sure? Kevin?

In particular I am inquiring for my 1982 SC, (Slateblue metallic, 661), also according to all literature my color was not available until '83 M.Y., my sticker is missing but pretty sure about color ID. Anyone who can give a positive ID? Here it is, pretty accurate pic:

No kidding! I just needed to hitch him up for a minute when I snapped the pic, that's the only thing I like about flag mirrors. If I paint it they will be gone for race mirrors, and F/G bumpers will eliminate the only thing good about stock bumpers, (besides crash protection, of course), which is that you can sit on them. They are heavy and incredibly stout.

Denis - don't know about the later cars but the early (pre-impact bumper) cars used at least 3 different paint manufacturers : Glasurit(G), Lechler(L) & Herbol(H). The relevant letter ( as well as numbers for the colour & coachbuilder) was stamped onto the paint code plate on the driver's door jamb.

Denis-
my car may be the same colour. Also an '82, original paint. Unfortunately it is also missing the paint code sticker. I know its not one of the standard colors offered for '82.

Not much help

Thanks for the responses. Andrew, yours looks a bit lighter in that pic, mine looks pretty much like my photo, but is affected by light, of course. I am nearly positive that it is Slateblue, a fairly popular color from '83-'85, but no sticker. The available similar color in '82 was Pacific blue, I think that Doug Zielke's car is P.B.

Adam, Only in the same ballpark both being metallic blues from the '80s. Petrol blue is more 'electric' looking(?), brighter and lighter w/ gold or something in it. Very cool color, but not the same, really.

Denis,

If I'm not msitaken that paint code is the same as mine on my 84 Targa. I still have the stickers in the front trunk and will check when I get home. I'm not sure if the code/color was available pre 84 or not but like I said the code is the same as mine. (I think)

The Manufacturer Codes were G- Glasurit , L - Lesonal , H- Herberts .
Later in the 90s you have also S- Sikkens ,
Glasurit and Lesonal have been bought by Akzo ( Sikkens) .

Dan and Harald, Thanks a million. My trunk sticker is gone due to a hood respray way back when. I got the option info on my car from PCNA in Atlanta, (for free over the phone), but paint/trim codes were not there, only in Germany I guess.

My car is probably a little darker than shown in the pic. The paint seems to have a tiny bit of red in it, seen in certain lights. I think there were 3 metallic blues in '82 but none of them match mine.

I also tried a PCNA phone call- they were able to inform me that my car had the black headliner option... and that was about it. Does anyone know if a kardex would have any more info than what they can give over the phone?

If Slateblue metallic was not available until '83; your 82 would have a "special order sticker" on the land of the engine lid latch. (A silver decal with black print -- to the left of the engine lid latch. )

Island, Do you mean where the color code sticker, (and all the other stickers), are? Or on the inside of the lid itself? My color sticker is gone, all of the others are fine.

Lesonal and Sikkens are owned by Akzo Nobel Coatings
Herburts (Standox) is now owned by Dupont
Glasurit is owned by BASF

It doesn't mean a thing what the original manufacture of the paint was, because the aftermarket paint you will buy is not the same as used by the OEM. The OE paints are a thermoset urethane and we can not duplicate this process in the bodyshop.

My choice would be Sikkens as it has the newest resin technology on the market. (Still not the same as the OEM) but in my opinion the best on the market at this time.

Good Luck,
Bryan

My 1982 911SC appears to be the same as yours (31G) Pacific Blue, but you can be the better judge as specific incident lighting effects the color in how it looks. 1982 cars used the same colors as used in 1981 cars.
The shades of blues include Pacific Blue, Light Blue Metallic (30T) Minerva Blue (304), or Arrow Blue (305). If you go to a autobody supply house, they would have chips of these paints to compare to your car.

I've seen Denis' car, and if it was a few years newer I'd swear it was Venetian Blue Metallic. Maybe it was built near the '82-'83 transition and is in fact Slate Blue?

Bryan, Great information. How would you personally rate Glasurit? I'm a die hard Glasso fan and have had nothing but great results with it.

More thanks for the replies! Island, isn't that where all of our cars have their color sticker? Other thing that occured to me; My friend at dealer called PCNA in Atlanta and got equipment and build date for my car, NO special color option!

I am pretty sure that it is slate blue, (now I feel like I'm losing it, I've seen lots of Slate blue cars), and I might still have sticker somewhere in car, it fell off after I bought it. Dang!

BTW, the reason for my interest in the original paint is that I want to have car re-sprayed and absolutely love the color the way it is. It's just chipped up, etc.

Yeah that does look an awful lot like my Venetian Blue. L36P. Paint code on my 87 is in the boot.
