Fuel gauge issue

I've had an issue with the fuel gauge (1972 911T) for awhile. The car has been garaged for sometime as I work through a variety of issues. After I start the car, the needle frequently jumps back and forth from about 1/3 of a tank (which is reasonable close to the amount of fuel in the tank) to "0". I've checked the fuel level sender in the tank. The float freely slides from top to bottom and the resistances appear to be in the normal range. I assume that I am dealing with some sort of short inside the gauge, but I've been reluctant to tear into it since electronics are not my strong suit.

Any opinions?

If you do a search on here for similar issues you will find what I am about to tell you. Many people experience this problem after a car has been lightly used, or not used at all. Disconnect your battery, remove the sender from the top of the fuel tank and remove the outer aluminium sleeve to expose the slider mechanism that moves as the level changes. You may find the main shaft is in need a polishing with a light metal polish to remove material that has built up in one place and thus causes the problem you describe. I haven't used any technical terms for the parts as I don't know them, but hopefully you will see what I mean. Obviously be careful with the fine longitudinal wires. Reassembly, as they say, is the reverse of stripping!

Good luck

Ian
