Drill Shocks before disposal?
I just finished a suspension project and looking to dispose of the old parts. I have read that you should drill your dampers or they could explode-it might have even been in the paperwork with the new inserts or maybe it was for the wifes Honda when I did that. I don't see this mentioned anywhere here before so does anybody really do this?
Does that mean they will empty on me if I drill them? If I bring them to a recycling center will they be treated like munitions? Original Bilsteins if that matters thanks for any thoughts on this |

If you're just planning on tossing them, I'd be happy to give you some cash to ship them our here. They can usually be rebuilt, and mine are about due for service.

I don't know about the risk of explosion, but the oil used in shocks needs to be properly disposed. Recycle the oil and metal separately. I use an angle grinder and cut a slit in the shocks to let the oil bleed into a catch can.

I'd sell them to someone who wants to send them for rebuild or save them for rebuild them yourself.
Penny saved and all that... -Steve
