Steering wheel nut size ???
Quick question: I am trying to remove the steering wheel on my '85 911 Targa. I need to know the bolt size that holds the wheel and if it is metric or standard.

tightening torque is 36 ft-lbs (for when you re-install it)
Suggest that when taking it off, you UNLOCK the steering column first- otherwise you run the risk of breaking the steering column lock. You might need a helper to hold the wheel while you loosen the nut.

Also scratch a reference line on the wheel hub and shaft for easy alignment when you put the wheel back on

I am getting ready to replace my steering wheel and turn signal assembly. Is it really necessary to use a torque wrench to tighten the nut back? I don't want to go buy one unless I truly have to.

And get a small socket, not a deep one. Otherwise it might not fit in. And you'll need a 6" extension to reach the nut.

I used a 27mm deep well socket in 1/2 inch (impact socket) from my local Napa Auto Parts since my other 27mm sockets wouldn't fit...

if you do not have metric size use 1-1/16" SAE
|

if you don't have the socket just get one from advance. here is a trick I learned for getting stubborn wheels off: you need a mallet and a hammer. place the handle of the mallet UNDER the wheel. put the head on the steering column. put one knee under the handle of the mallet. put your other knee under the other side of the wheel(or use your free hand to pull up on the wheel). use your legs to pull up on the wheel while hitting the other end of the mallet with the hammer. never had to do this with the Porsche.
