3.2 DME Performance

We all want the best performance we can get from the trusty 3.2L engine, right? Well, there have been a few posts that have talked about restoring the DME air meter to its original performance. Joe Garcia's post is a good example:

Joe said >>Have to agree that most 3.2's are guttless off the line, but that does not mean that it is normal or acceptable.
From my experience with my own late production 86 3.2, I found that the sluggish low end performance was caused by spring tension fatigue on the air flow meter causing the mixture to go way too rich and bog on acceleration.

My Carrera now feels so strong off the line that I often take off in 2nd gear, cruise around town at 1500 rpm and still feel the surge at 4000 rpm.<<

Joe did his work by setting up a remote mixture control in the cabin, and test driving to find the sweet spot. I'm guessing that this may be a little sporty for many of us, but the idea of getting the DME back to its design performance is what we are after.

Has anyone seen or heard of a procedure for refreshing and re-calibrating the components of the DME system? Its amazing to see the amount of deep knowledge of the CIS that turns up on this board, and I'm pretty sure there are some DME gurus out there who can guide us 3.2 guys to glory, right?

I heard that if you disconnect power to the DME unti and let it sit overnight before connecting, it resets the DME and you get high performance. Haven't tried it yet. Any comments?

Would be good if it were that simple, but even if a reset of the DME brain made a difference, there would still be work to do on the airmeter etc. A couple of recent post suggest real gains to be had by refreshing the airmeter mechanicals, and tuning. This is the holy grail we seek.
